All school lunches should be free. And it’s a complete societal failure that they’re not.
Próspero ano, amigos míos.
Just like every year, a friendly PSA:

“Feliz ano nuevo” means “happy new anus.”

“Feliz año nuevo” means “happy new year.”

Wishing folks either one is nice, but make sure you’re using the one you mean.

Did they make it look like Tr*mp on purpose?
This is an artificial mouth created by Japanese researchers. It uses artificial vocal cords, a trachea system, and a flexible silicone mouth that moves and shapes sound in real time.

It sounds so human-like!

For those who still have to teach on Monday and Tuesday, we can all go to school wearing sweatpants, right?

Yes!! We do our students a disservice when we try to boil language learning down to one thing (input > output).

Our classes should be about much more than CI! #LangChat
Comprehensible input (Krashen) and memory apps and tactics (Duo, Anki, flashcards, mnemonics, repetition, etc.), straight out of the box, are effective but only utilizes one category.

We're not machines with inputs:outputs. Learning is a complex system, messy, nonlinear, human.

I’m excited to see all of the fashion in the Capitol for this event.
Trump has announced an "unprecedented four-day athletic event" with "one young man and one young woman from each state and territory."

What’s the best way to care for oneself as a teacher the week before winter break?

I just overheard my 6th grader venting about middle school and he said…

Teachers only have to teach one lesson about one subject each day, but students have to learn about *everything*

And, teacher chat, I think he’s onto us 😅

I’m doing the teacher walk of shame (aka running an errand out in public in my PJs since it’s comfy cozy day at school)

Last night I got to present how I include nonbinary language in my Spanish classes to my state teachers’ union’s pride group. Felt really good to be in community with some truly amazing educators.

Feeling extra thankful for my union today! 🏳️‍🌈

This is the only name I teach for it in my Spanish class
The plant many of us call poinsettia, Euphorbia pulcherrima, is called Cuetlaxochitl by the people who first named it.

Pre covid I did this for a while, and my voice always shook when I spoke; thing is, they have to listen to you anyways.

You're not being graded, you don't have to be eloquent or charming, your contribution still counts just fine. Do it if you can.
I really can't emphasize enough that if you care about local politics, all you gotta do is show up. Just a regular schmegular person showing up. Literally just show up consistently in person and within a remarkably short amount of time, you will have a shocking amount of influence.

Again: the Purpose of LLM- type "AI" bullshit engines is not to tell you the truth or to lie to you, but to tell you something you are statistically determined to be more likely to accept, irrespective of facts— which makes them perfect for accelerating dis- & misinformation & persuasive propaganda…
AI dialogues shifted political support by 2 to 3 points in trials, eclipsing standard ads. Roughly one-third of this effect persisted for a month. However, models optimized for persuasion proved more factually error-prone.

AI chatbots can persuade voters to change their minds
Conversations with AI can sway people’s political views. Concerningly, a chatbot’s facts are not always accurate, especially when it supports right-wing positions.

Teachers, a reminder as you decorate your room for the winter…

If you immediately take your decorations down after coming back from break, they were probably more Christmas-themed than winter themed.
