Hello! I’m DJ. I love making games and software more generally. I got to marry my best friend and be a dad to two amazing girls and one rambunctious lab. I believe the strengths of human history are found in how we come together to build institutions that lift up and protect our most vulnerable.

The longest filibuster in history of the U.S. Congress was conducted in 1957 by S.C. Senator Strom Thurmond, who spent 24 hours and 18 minutes attempting to stop the passage of the Civil Rights Act.

Cory Booker just crossed hour 19 and is still going strong.

I can't remember the last time I saw an article just focus on this. Not that they've bent the truth or misrepresented a few facts a little, but that every single solitary thing that the GOP says on the topic is a stone cold lie with absolutely no basis in reality.

Today we're publishing a monster feature that dives deep into the initial six weeks over Elon Musk's government takeover. Our entire newsroom came together to help make this story happen. Read this culmination of our blood, sweat, and tears:
Inside Elon Musk’s ‘Digital Coup’
Musk’s loyalists at DOGE have infiltrated dozens of federal agencies, pushed out tens of thousands of workers, and siphoned millions of people’s most sensitive data. The next step: Unleash the AI.

Again this is why you talk openly about things you like and enjoyed and feel others may like as well. Stop just sharing only what you hated cos it’s easy engagement but put the effort into sharing what is good cos it does make a difference.
Last year, an author mentioned my shop on her substack. It changed my income so drastically that this is the spike of orders from that *one* mention last year. Word of mouth for an artist can change everything.

Now that Scarlet Hollow's back, it's once again time to talk about its relationship system.

We were frustrated with the standard approval binary most RPGs use, so we decided to track a huge amount of info to make characters feel more dynamic.

One thing ingrained in me studying Latin and English Literature at an early age for so many years is there are just no new problems. Every millennia mostly deals with similar people having similar problems of individualism, organization, scarcity, cooperation, competition, and power.
This is the game right here. This is reason for why everything is the way it is.

Or as Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote way back in 1821:

"The rich have become richer, and the poor have become poorer; and the vessel of the State is driven between the Scylla and Charybdis of anarchy and despotism."
Sen. Bernie Sanders highlighted a new analysis showing that the wealthiest 1% has extracted $79 trillion from the bottom 90% of Americans since 1975. In 2023 alone, $3.9 trillion was redirected upward—enough to provide every U.S. worker with a $32,000 raise.

18F is an important part of recent American government history and people should know about it.
18F, the federal government’s technology shop, was demolished by Musk’s team shortly after midnight. It was a cost-recoverable org, charging agencies for their expertise, using a consulting model. Its cost to government was negligible, its benefits huge. My team there once saved DoD $500 billion.

This is so gorgeous, and made me realize how bonkers it is we never got a Deus Ex remake in the HR engine? It would have been so dang cool to see that iconic yellow replaced by this UNATCO blue!

Read this thread. Federal workers - like all the workers the modern republicans have attacked over the last decade (doctors, teachers, journalists) work hard for little pay and lesser accolades.
When OMB head Russ Vought talks about deliberate efforts to put federal employees "in trauma" and make them quit their jobs, he's talking about people like Michelle, recently fired by Musk/Trump.

Samus Aran maroons on a densely populated city planet, and must bounty hunt like a neo-noir detective against a backdrop painted with the colors of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Cool World, and old school Men in Black (the canceled Prey 2, but more campy and colorful)
I imagined how goofy the shoulders would end up looking, giggled, then immediately drew it because I needed to see it made real

Jake/Grey Alien is a true “working indie”- thoughtful, helpful, and tirelessly releasing games for decades that keep the lights on in a tough, changing market.

Card (Balatro) and indie horror (Buckshot Roulette) are hot- they are perfectly positioned for a big hit and they’ve certainly earned it!

This is good advice and a good thread of folks to support (even more in the replies and quotes).

One thing I keep coming back to is that the people in power can’t conceptualize their victims as individuals, but you can. You can help one specific person and that matters.
It's hard to know what to say or whether it's even worth adding to the doom - what I will say is buy your trans friends' weird zine, their album, their art game - buy them a beer or a soda or a meal - give them some ko-fi money for doing absolutely nothing. We gotta protect trans kids and adults.

Encountered this problem in software dev too!

My galaxy take is that many team inefficiencies are rooted in acquiescing to power-holder (self-perceived) efficiencies, where power-holder can be a lead, another org, a stakeholder, client, etc.

(I say this having been on both sides of the problem!)
This is not to call anybody specific out but often we reinvent the wheel for project management because directors and leads have ways they like to work, simply do not budge, and then production has to slap something together around that. I like to work with people on systems that help them (cont)
just as an outsider with an interest in video game development, and coming from the film industry, it really feels like the game industry has no standardized workflow. every new project gets a bespoke production system with a lot of uncertainty about tasks, roles and who should be doing what

Looking for things that make me hopeful. This is one of them. There are WAY more real people than billionaires, and they are affected by real problems, and have real experience dealing with them. They will make their own websites, and bring web credibility back as the consolidated platforms falter.
Pretty amazing that nonprofit Watch Duty -- which says it has 150 volunteers working around the clock to track wildfires -- has become the most trusted source of information on LA fires. Operated by retired/volunteer firefighters, dispatchers, and reporters. Real people.
