Oh look, more of the same from the New York Times playing down renewables/decarbonization and playing up nuclear and natural gas (w/ mythical "capture). This time via David Victor, whom I identified as a problematic actor in the climate space in "The #NewClimateWar" (bookshop.org/p/books/the-...)

Today on Volts: you've probably heard that Australia has cheap rooftop solar power. You've probably also heard some rumors & myths about it. (Is it destabilizing the grid?) I called my favorite Australian energy expert to clear it all up. This is a fun one!

This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal: www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/o...

Interesting framing:

"A blanket of carbon smothering the Earth has begun to jeopardise the stable conditions in which humanity has thrived"

As @dfenton.bsky.social has argued, "the pollution blanket" is a powerful metaphor for talking about climate change.

I'd say this was a joke but it's no laughing matter. They only way the NRC could approve this construction permit on such a ridiculously short schedule is by sweeping every significant safety issue under the rug or putting it off until the operating license application. www.nrc.gov/sites/defaul...

Rogan has also on several episodes cherry-picked & grossly misrepresented a paleoclimate study discussed in a 2024 Washington Post article. He says it showed that we're in a cooling period. The article itself noted that the planet is now warming faster than at any time in the past 485B years (8/11)
Scientists have captured Earth’s climate over the last 485 million years. Here’s the surprising place we stand now.
An effort to understand Earth’s past climates uncovered a history of wild temperature shifts and offered a warning on the consequences of human-caused warming.
