When I say "I have a conflict with this meeting" I do not mean that I have another meeting at the same time.

What I mean is, I take ubmrage against it. I have a feud with it on a historic scale.

Every tech update now is like: "Great news, the word processor you've relied on for twenty years has learned to juggle! Is it good at it? No! Does it help in any way? Of course not! Has it made it insufferable to use? Oh, absolutely."

Hey friends! I did a TEDx talk and it's now up on the TED Conferences YouTube. It's possibly the best and most important talk I've ever done.

I would ask that you watch it, and please SHARE it broadly and widely. Thank you! youtu.be/dVG8W-0p6vg #AI #Tech #TED

Head of Signal, Meredith Whittaker, on so-called "agentic AI" and the difference between how it's described in the marketing and what access and control it would actually require to work as advertised.

New: A security researcher found a bug that revealed the private recovery phone number of almost any Google account.

TechCrunch verified the bug w/ the researcher, who quickly brute-forced the phone number of a test Google account we had set up.

This was one of my favorite talks at Build. Excited to use CSnakes in our production C# code that uses python for fuzzy text matching.
Here's an amazing talk and demo with Anthony Shaw where we show native Python running in-process with .NET at speed with CSnakes - youtu.be/fDbCqalegNU?...

The word “login” comes from throwing a log attached to a rope with knots overboard a ship to see how many knots go by over time (see also, knots as speed). You’d then put that info in the “log book.” You’d “log in” on a regular basis. This wasn’t from 1959, it was likely from 1689! Etymology baby!

This is how I conduct interviews when hiring devs. You can even bring me code you’ve written before, but we’ll spend time discussing the what, hows, and whys about it- sans computer.
I will take this opportunity to plump my favorite software interviewing process, which is:

1) give them a take home piece, and an hour or so to work on it

2) but the real "interview" is not the code you sent in, it's the conversational code review you have later with two of your prospective peers.
(I personally talked with this person and know them well)

This company hired full remote without issue for years: this is the first proper shocker they have.

They are changing their process, of course. In-person interviews, in-part likely to be unavoidable.

Masking discourse is on again and I’ll just say if you see people masking when few others are it’s likely because they’ve determined that for them, in that setting, the benefit of not catching (or spreading) whatever’s going around is worth the cost of masking. It’s rarely more complicated than that
