I'm not sure where this idea comes from that ICE and Border Patrol couldn't hack it in the "real" military. The data does not support this; in fact both of these agencies recruit heavily from the military. A very large number of Border Patrol agents and Deportation Officers are former infantry.

I need someone who knows anything about Truth and Reconciliation commissions so I can pick their brain. Basically speaking, we're going to have to flat out require news networks to air the proof of crimes and rights abuses.

This was my biggest "Oh my god people don't read" moment while going through the materials for the essay, btw. It's right there in "Ain't I a Woman?" It's been out since 1981. I read Smith's article talking about it and had to go look it up myself. This actually happened.

The animating force at the heart of US conservatism currently is incandescent rage at the mere idea of women's autonomy and independence. An image of a smiling woman who looks insufficiently deferential for their tastes riles them up enough to tear up the social contract.
