Reminder that, if you want to avoid big online stores like Amazon, you can get all my ebooks through itch.io.

(And you can buy all the Mennik Thorn books together in a bundle that is far cheaper than buying them separately.)

Exploitation, plain & simple. Who would want to work with these utter clowns?
The publisher has cut their costs by outsourcing to this company, the company has cut their costs by using AI/low-paid staff instead of paying for a proper job, while I’ve spent hours & hours fixing the manuscript, so all the extra labour from cost-costing has fallen on me, the unremunerated author

I forgot to share this, but I wrote up a page listing some of the inspirations for situations and locations that appear in Darkened Hill & Dale.

I have also listed 'things that I thought I'd made up but are at least partially real'. 😬

And most likely a better way too.
As a writer, any time you want to use a plot device or genre tradition which you know some people find problematic, and your instinct is 'yes, but-', stop there. Think through alternatives until you work out how to achieve what you want or need for your story. There will be another way to do it.
One of the first things I noticed was how effectively the diversity in key roles and background actors denatured the problem of 'light=good, dark=bad' in the source material. Yes, it's a literary tradition from well before Tolkien, but it's no longer fit for any purpose in current SFF writing.
