“This Might Surprise You: A Breast Cancer Story” is out now.

It’s a graphic memoir: comics can do things that no other medium can. I’ve tried to be as honest as possible while also making you laugh. I’ll break your heart while giving you a hug.

Thought I might repost some of my favourite cancer-themed cartoons of the year.

I’ll be shifting towards different subjects in 2026 (although still more than happy to chat about cancer.)

Firstly: Choose Chemo (with apologies to @irvinewelsh.bsky.social )

I think if you’re going to give away information about yourself you need to know why you’re doing it.

I thought this was basically fine? Don’t love the AI stuff of course but I do appreciate the thinking about what a more viable comics industry in the UK could look like.
With the publication of Comic Book UK’s “Vision for growth” white paper today – essentially the blueprint for everything the newly-formed trade association plan to do going forward – Mark Fuller, its Chief Executive outlines their strategy: downthetubes.net/game-on-why-...

Women are so often expected to be “relatable”.

I want my work to be relatable. But me, myself?

I think I want to cultivate an air of mystery.

“This Might Surprise You: A Breast Cancer Story” is out now in the UK and USA.

I hope it will give hope to many people going through cancer treatment over the festive period.

The reason I have a book published is ultimately because of Instagram.

Don’t think I could have made that happen here, much as I enjoy chatting to many people on BlueSky.
i have said this before but if you are actually interested in influencing people beyond a narrow circle of too-online journalists you will be making direct to camera videos on tiktok, instagram and youtube. if you primarily post on text-based social media then you're just dicking around.

Because kids’ comics are awesome.

Now let’s make it happen for grown-up comics, too.

The new Knives Out film is great! Why are so many reviews saying it wasn’t funny? I thought it was very funny.

My thesis for 2026 is that Instagram can be a place for sharing big ideas and weird stuff.

I’ll give it a go, anyway.

Why is everyone on Instagram so keen to be seen as relatable?

I want my work to be relatable. But me? Myself? Maybe I want an air of mystery.

But the great thing about digital art is that once I’ve drawn the pattern, I can reuse it and do cool things with it.

Been learning how to draw Celtic knotwork. This is a key pattern inspired by the Nigg stone (I’m using the guide in the George Bain book)

These are challenging. I have respect for those stone carvers and manuscript illuminators who couldn’t tap the screen to undo.

Have you read Cynthia Thickpenny's paper on the key pattern at Applecross, Nigg and Rosemarkie? On pp162-165 she shows how the carver knew they were going wrong with the Rosemarkie panel, and how they compensated for the error: journals.socantscot.org/index.php/ps...
