Art history books IN Russian and Polish and Bulgarian. If you have an institution or library or university that wants that, that's AMAZING, would love to talk, but that's the big hurdle from here in northeast Missouri.
My sister and I have been tasked to go through all of my dad's books and there are so many incredible Russian and Polish and Bulgarian art history books that will just... disappear? Because we can't read then and don't have space? And I hate it so much.

These bookshelves are big memories.

So...Christmas research was kind of the definition of a rabbithole.

Oh, Ben Franklin's grandfather was up to some interesting things.

To...

She did what during the Salem Witch Trials?

I accidentally celebrated X-Mas by reading about Puritans.

Take that idolatry, Cotton, ya bastard.

When Google's AI Overview, which I did not utilize and had no desire to use, actually located something I needed:

This is awesome.
One of the earliest-ever modern portrayals of Santa Claus features him gifting Union soldiers with a jumping-jack doll of Jefferson Davis dangling from a noose - as drawn by political cartoonist Thomas Nast.

Merry Christmas everyone! 🎄🌟

We all love a good reindeer at Christmas! These ones were painted in Font-de-Gaume cave in France 18,000 years ago!

I love my family, I do. But...

A few years ago I was informed that they rather not just buy books for me so I spent the last few years filling my list with random things that I liked.

Now its "Your list is so weird". Yes! Yes it is! You did this!

I love them so much.

Spending a bit of this Eve post-dinner reading a history of the pre-18th century fur trade.

The book is from 1959 which is a simple enough read and informative, even though I will be triple checking if it holds up, but comes with this mini-game called "Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope."

Merry Christmas!

This is how he acts on camera.

"Don't worry, kid. If we thought Santa was bad, we'd blow him to Hell and grilled venison shall rain down upon your house. Like the book! Reindeer paws! The best!"
Trump: We track Santa. We want to make sure that Santa is being good. We want to make sure that he's not infiltrated, that we're not infiltrating into our country a bad Santa. Santa loves Oklahoma like I do. You know, Oklahoma was very good to me in the election

Oh! In January, while packing for a conference in Chicago, I made a mistake in packing and ended having to wear the same distinctive black sweater for two days as part of the same exact outfit. There were no other options.

Paper went well though. I think.
I don’t give a shit about your accomplishments this year. What’s the dumbest shit you did the past 12 months? The truly stupidest decision you made in 2025?

If you study one genre of history and ignore every other one, willfully, you aren't studying, you're a hobbyist, and that's nice, and Barnes & Noble has a stack for you, where the authors are more clever than you are and engaged in more fields of history to write the book you think doesn't.

I slipped into being a military historian because:

1. I was told genocide studies could be within its purview (Thanks @drrobthompson.com).

2. If I want to write about Indigenous genocide in 18th Century North America, between King William's War & Tecumseh's War, there is no other box to be in.
90% of military history is about where the latrines are dug. You cannot make war if you have dysentery.

I remember students complaining about hand cramps when I was proctoring finals as a TA thirty years ago.

And uh, you’re not supposed to “like” the final exam.
Does anyone else bristle at this framing? WSJ says blue books are “torturing” students with hand cramps, and “nobody likes them.”

Listen, students have been outsourcing everything to AI and cheating their way through college. Blue books should be celebrated as a return to authentic human learning.
They Were Every Student’s Worst Nightmare. Now Blue Books Are Back.
Cheating with ChatGPT has become a huge problem for colleges. The solution is painfully old-school.

I’m not sure what’s true in the Epstein Files, but when you recall those facts it all seems plausible
