Excessive force. PERIOD!

They called them “violent mobs,” but the violence came from the guys with badges and body armor.

Remember April 2009 when about 250,000 people took to America’s streets in Tea Party rallies and the media was like “oh man, the Dems are in trouble?” Approximately 28X as many people took to the streets to protest Trump yesterday. Didn’t even make the NYT front page.
In April of 2009 I observed the Tea Party rally in Salem. As this front page story says, there were a couple hundred people there. This past weekend in Salem there were roughly 2-3000 people at the Hands Off rally. Yet the Tea Party coverage seemed to take that event far more seriously.

The American experiment is based on the idea that citizenship is not based on ethnicity. We tried to conflate the two with slavery and the constitution failed as a result. The reconstruction amendments made this principle explicit. This shit is fundamentally anti American and anti patriotic.

Let’s get it done!

In 1776, approximately 20% of the people who lived in the 13 colonies were enslaved. As his White House gears up for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Trump wonders why we spend so much time talking about how bad slavery was.

Also liberals are fucking dumb not to blame shit on Republicans. Most liberals wouldn’t blame Trump for COVID either. Stop being so fucking nice. They drowned those Texans. They gave us all Covid. They’re the problem.

Jesus H Christ.
There were a lot of folks here insisting yesterday that weather service cuts had no impact on Texas flood deaths. There’s zero way you can draw conclusions like hours later. Important follow up here. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/05/u...

It’s such a profoundly important point - and one all (capital-D) Democrats and (small-d) democrats should seize on relentlessly: Define your project through the egalitarian promise, acknowledge the country has yet to live up to it, insist it is a patriotic duty to finally fulfill that vision.
From the 1970s into the 2010s, a statement like this would not have coded as particularly partisan or leftist. The fact that virtually no Republican public figure could have said this today is a sign of how much that party has radicalized away from what used to be the center of US politics.
America is beautiful, contradictory, unfinished. I am proud of our country even as we constantly strive to make it better, to protect and deepen our democracy, to fulfill its promise for each and every person who calls it home.

Happy Independence Day. No Kings in America.

The time for careful calculation has passed. It made sense in earlier political moments, but not now. The GOP has called the question. Are we a nation who chuckles when a DHS secretary who shot her dog in a gravel pit makes a joke about alligators ripping the flesh of humans in her custody, or not?

FWIW, the Heritage Foundation has a journalism fellowship named after the Guardabassi family. The male head of that family was one of Mussolini's emissaries in the US in the 1930s, and his wife "Countess Guardabassi" was one of the leading funders of US antisemites and neo-Nazis in the 1950s-60s.
An appropriate way to understand Project Esther, and Trump's "anti-semitism" purge, is that it is predominantly driven by right-wing Christian nationalists attacking institutions they dislike, even if it also includes attacking Jewish students and groups.
