Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

Alex Pretti will be remembered for his courage to stare evil in the face and not let it get in the way of his innate goodness to do the right thing. I like to believe the courageous Olympic athletes who are speaking out in defence of truth are partly inspired by Alex, the hero and martyr.

One of the many ways the 1970s is a foreign country is how marginal this vision of space was. Common heritage of mankind, site for international cooperation, frontier of research. The fight to make it a “perfect playground for libertarian billionaires” was a long one.

One of the great moments of cinematic history, always inspiring. I think of Father Alfred Delp, SJ; Sophie Scholl, Dietrich von Hildebrand, Simone Weil, and all the great champions of human dignity who fought fascism, many of whom paid the price with their blood.
