Hi, Bluesky. 👋🏻 I’m a science communicator in my work life, a former smallish-town mayor in my public life. I post about Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Orange County, North Carolina; local and state politics; land use and transportation; LGBTQ+ issues; and occasional highlights from everyday life.

you could fact check this — there aren’t 30 million illegal immigrants and there is no evidence that the presence of an immigrant in say houston has any impact on housing in madison, wisconsin — or you could note straightforwardly that this is just nazi rhetoric
JD Vance: "A lot of young people are saying housing is way too expensive. Why is that? Because we flooded the country with 30 million illegal immigrants who were taking houses that ought by right go to American citizens."

While we do not agree on all issues, I want to publicly thank UNC-CH Chancellor Lee Roberts for clearly stating today in Faculty Council that UNC cannot and will not sign Trump's Compact, because it raises irresolvable issues of academic freedom. That was important for faculty & students to hear.

This week’s elections prove that when candidates focus on the issues that really matter to voters– like healthcare, education, and the climate crisis, rather than attacking transgender people; they win. From Virginia to New York– anti-trans hate is a losing issue.

With no more votes expected in NC this year, Republicans will have gotten the least amount of things done in any long session since taking control of the General Assembly in 2011. My look at just how (un)productive the past 10 months have been--> #ncpol

When I served in the majority on the North Carolina Supreme Court, the court held that extreme partisan gerrymandering violated the state constitution. That ruling was rooted in the principle that voters should choose their representatives—not the other way around.

Just so everyone is clear, the main issue in the Supreme Court voting rights case tomorrow is whether it's racist against white people to enforce the Voting Rights Act.

I'm dead serious. We live in incredibly stupid times.

In Carrboro, we saw that new development in key locations, because of its MUCH stricter standards, can even catch and slow water from neighborhoods without controls and reduce flooding locally, even in a huge storm like Chantal.
