Walk over the back fields this morning. This is an old miners path that followed the route of the unfinished Dorset and Somerset Canal.

Any recommends for decent books on video game design or pixel art? Son is 15 and looking to do a diploma in video game art/design/animation after GCSEs, so any ideas for Christmas presents would be welcome.

Just a reminder that you don't *have* to have a view on, or take part in, All The Latest Online Discourse about your chosen art/craft/job/hobby.

You can just do your thing, undistracted by all the jostling, the back & forth, making good work.

Seriously, it's unlikely you'll miss anything vital.

I have roasted some almonds, and at lunchtime I'm going to eat a mince pie. Take THAT, seasonal ennui.

Can we instead go back to asking if any pop song with tubular and/or sleigh bells in it can be viewed as a Christmas song, regardless of the lyrics?
i’m setting you free. i’m releasing you from the discourse

Went back to that fruit (drinks?) stall again to see if they have any grapes yet, but the guy just seemed to get angry. I suppose I could try again tomorrow.

Much as I'd love the "break ai with poetry" story to be true it looks, at the very least, flawed.

Me having a go at playing a dulcimer in a 14th century Abbot's kitchen today (Glastonbury). I already hankered after learning to play and now I'm like "BUT MUUUM WHAT IF I HAVE ONE FOR XMAS *AND* MY BIRTHDAY?". Second photo for the vibe.

My 1st years' UG International History essays came in this week. Requirement that the essays demonstrate engagement with identified set texts. Quick survey of the submissions indicates the vast majority of students have done this. Not saying they've all done it well, but they've certainly done it.
devastating thread

This, but also this entire thread. Studies need to be done to see if the data matches some alarming observations.
It's only a matter of time before humanities departments will be forced to accept AI-authored assignments, as part of revised university policy to cooperate with these billionaires. It's already happening, and our response needs to be decisive. Because our students' ability to *think* is at stake.

You’ve seen the signs: ‘Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted’. They lie. In the UK ‘trespass’ is a civil offence, not a criminal one. You cannot face prosecution simply for being on someone’s land, off a designated Right of Way, open access land, or land where bylaws permit access, without permission.
