Gardens are sanctuaries, a place that ties us to nature. The word paradise comes from Old Persian, pairidaeza (meaning enclosed garden). To be with loved ones, surrounded by the natural world—those elements drew me to this photo, as I often return to garden/nature in my collection of photos. 1/x

Notice how the popular media narrative has moved on, while people on the ground in Minneapolis are still struggling and crying out that things are as bad as ever. This is how fascist regimes operate — overreach, recalibration, normalization. Get louder, not quieter.

NEW: ICE has a plan to lease offices across the US as part of a secret, months-long expansion campaign.

Today, @wired.com is publishing dozens of those locations. Many are near schools, medical offices, and places of worship.

Vital work from @leahfeiger.bsky.social that I'm proud to publish.

Read @andreapitzer.bsky.social on Trump’s grotesque plans:
When I got the contract to write a history of concentration camps in 2014, I hoped to keep the US from ending up here. That didn't work out! But now it's critical to understand how much is already in process and the enormity of what's coming. The sooner we act to stop it, the more people we'll save.

man I’m sorry to be all corny here but when I see a “the city is beautiful! There’s more to it than homeless people!” I gotta say you know who’s also beautiful? People who have no place to live & are trying to get by in a system that has turned its back on them & if you don’t see that that’s on you

Reminders: Law enforcement lies out of the gate as a rule about shootings in general. I don't say this to diminish anyone's reactions to what ICE is doing. Those reactions are appropriate, and we should be raging against this violence. We should also have a baseline understanding of state violence.
Has there been a single shooting by immigration officers over the last year in which DHS did *not* blatantly lie about what happened?

That mask is also popular with neo-Nazi accelerationist groups, which I think is really important to mention. Just like it's important to mention that ICE agents in Denver have been dropping Ace of Spades cards where they've kidnapped people. The white nationalist culture at work is clear.
In 2009, this was the mask of a UK SAS character in “Call of Duty.” By 2015 it was de rigeur among Iraqi government commandos and Shiite militiamen. In 2018, in “Sicario 2,” it was what CIA surrogate characters wore to disguise themselves as cartel gunmen.

Now US law enforcement wears it.
