Shigella infection is facilitated by interaction of human enteric α-defensin 5 with colonic epithelial receptor P2Y11 - Nature Microbiology
HD5 induces filopodial extensions in epithelial cells that the pathogen Shigella exploits to facilitate invasion and infection.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

“Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion
The Trump administration has put a hold on all federal financial grants and loans, affecting tens of billions of dollars in payments.

Now that we’re on Bluesky, it’s a good time to bring back #badsciencedrawings – a collection of figures that prove that science is more science than art.
Before Biorender, all we had was MS Paint and a dream. But ovals, lines, and lightning bolts were all we needed

Restoring hippocampal glucose metabolism rescues cognition across Alzheimer’s disease pathologies
Impaired cerebral glucose metabolism is a pathologic feature of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), with recent proteomic studies highlighting disrupted glial metabolism in AD. We report that inhibition of indo...

This threaded discussion on sex differences in mechanisms leading to Alzheimer’s disease and neurodegeneration is worth a read. #microglia, #neuroinflammation
You hit the NAIL ON THE HEAD, Simon. While women and men might 'get there' together, the biological pathways are sometimes (not always) vastly different. There is increasing evidence of immune pathways being implicated (doi.org/10.1093/brai... as one ex). So much more that needs to be discovered.
