Brains, biases and amyloid beta: Why the female brain deserves a closer look in Alzheimer’s research
New results suggest the disease progresses differently in women, but we need more basic science to unpack the mechanisms involved.

Our new paper is out!

We find that Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (but interestingly not estradiol or testosterone) shows sex specific associations with tau-PET burden in the Framingham Heart Study. In men, it seems to be protective (higher SHBG = lower tau)

We now have a blood biomarker that is even more strongly associated with tau PET and cognitive symptoms than even p-tau217! Plasma eMTBR-tau243 will help us to understand whether cognitive impairment is likely to be related to Alzheimer's pathology. #ENDALZ

It is an honor to be counted amongst these amazing scientists in this piece, and a privilege to be able to do this incredible work
"A little boost went a long way". Increasing an X factor from the silent X improved cognition in aging male and female mice. Privileged to have our discovery reported in @nytimes.com, alongside findings from Kaitlin Casaletto and Rachel Buckley @bucklr01.bsky.social. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/05/h...

Thanks to @denadubal.bsky.social and @bucklr01.bsky.social for talking to me for this story about the fascinating X chromosome!
“It’s a paradigm shift to know that the silent X doesn’t stay asleep,” says Dena Dubal, a neuroscientist and neurologist at the University of California School of Medicine in San Francisco, who led the study.
