If you have to get permission to teach in your area of expertise from people who are definitionally not qualified to adjudicate your expertise then you are no longer working at a university.

You’re working at a state propaganda factory.

HOLY COW. Basically, as folks note in the comments. Halligan allowed the court reporter to believe they were done for the day but then called the Grand Jury back. There is no judge, etc at these. So very likely she reconvened with no court reporter.

I can't see how charges stand if that's true.
Today, the judge deciding the legality of Lindsey Halligan's appointment said the court reporter stopped transcribing grand jury proceedings in the Comey case at 4:28 PM. That's over TWO HOURS that's missing.

All of BLS has been furloughed since October 1st. That means no one was collecting data in Oct. You can’t just walk into a Costco in mid-November and find out what the price of a good was in October. That’s why an October CPI isn’t possible.

An interesting tidbit in the joint status report filed in the Broadview ICE facility case today:

ICE says video from inside the facility "between October 19, 2025, and October 31, 2025, has been irretrievably destroyed" and can't be produced in discovery.

This is it. It’s not about money alone, or even the power to influence government. It’s about impunity to behave any way they want without consequences.
in online corners like these I think people largely recognize how credulous, unprincipled opposition to "wokeness" functioned as lightly papered over defenses of impunity, but it's one of those drums people should probably start beating for normies
Something absolutely perfect about Larry Summers riffing about the scourge of woke cancel culture being unfair to predatory men in a friendly email to his pal JEFFREY EPSTEIN.

the biggest lesson from the emails today is that powerful people are so unafraid of consequences for crimes as bad as “raping children” that they will just talk about it openly in emails

the only path to a better society is one where that is no longer true

Medicare's hospice benefit "was designed not to maintain a healthy market for hospice, but to disentangle hospice from market logic. To achieve this, we need to do more than merely stabilize the hospice industry through greater competition—we need to create spaces where care remains uncommodified."
Today, Elle Rothermich explains how hospice care, once rooted in service and compassion, became fertile ground for private equity—and why antitrust scrutiny alone can’t restore what was lost when care became subject to market logic.
Hospice Commodification and the Limits of Antitrust
As hospice care is increasingly dominated by private equity firms, an antitrust response, while necessary, has the potential to normalize the language of the market as the default mode for discussing…

ICE/BP’s next targets are reportedly Charlotte and New Orleans.

Two things:

1) If they had the capacity to hit many cities at once, rather than pick on one or two at a time, they would.

2) Moving south seems to confirm speculation that they’re leaving Chicago because it got cold.

We authors all have nuanced views on this topic.

A tangent: journals DO add value to the system. But there is absolutely no reason that for-profit journals should exist. You can already pay EiCs $500k salaries at non-profits. Why would we allow journals to skim even more off the top?

Threatening to yank federal funding unless a state agrees to impositions on what its state-law, state-funded programs do was the whole point of why they got SCOTUS to strike down mandatory Medicaid expansion.

They never really mean it about states' rights, but sometimes it's particularly flagrant.
