Most bioarchaeologists will greet the skeletons they study, and many I know will say goodnight when leaving.

Taxonomy is basically fudged together, with different groups working from different definitions, but it is easier to just keep slapping a plaster on it and tying it with fraying string than it is to dismantle it all and start again. 🧪

I think about that a lot. There’s a very real sense in which that has guided my entire approach to Being Online. Why are we here, in this particular space? Why are our words important? How do we make our mark, how do we contribute?

I have to give Stibnite the art vote. Used in kohl, glassmaking & pyrotechnics for centuries it is also a grey-black pigment found on Gothic sculpture and 16th century painting like these. #MinCup23
![The Isenheim Altarpiece is an altarpiece sculpted and painted by, respectively, the Germans Nikolaus of Haguenau and Matthias Grünewald in 1512–1516.[1] It is on display at the Unterlinden Museum at Colmar, Alsace, in France. It is Grünewald's largest work and is regarded as his masterpiece. It was painted for the Monastery of St. Anthony in Issenheim near Colmar, which specialized in hospital work. The Antonine monks of the monastery were noted for their care of plague sufferers as well as for their treatment of skin diseases, such as ergotism. The image of the crucified Christ is pitted with plague-type sores, showing patients that Jesus understood and shared their afflictions. The veracity of the work's depictions of medical conditions was unusual in the history of European art.

Trilobites were the first creatures with eyesight and the only ones (we know of) with #Calcite lenses. Calcite concentrated dim light, and stalks gave trilobites a high, 3D view of the world around them.

I’m leaning toward calcite after the trilobite eye discourse. Have just returned from from the Yucatán and want to ask: Is that beautiful limestone peninsula with its cenotes a calcite dreamscape?

Trilobites were the first creatures with eyesight and the only ones (we know of) with #Calcite lenses. Calcite concentrated dim light, and stalks gave trilobites a high, 3D view of the world around them.
