What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

Most bioarchaeologists will greet the skeletons they study, and many I know will say goodnight when leaving.
I heard of one who bought a night light for a collection they were working on just in case anyone was scared of the dark 🏺
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

Taxonomy is basically fudged together, with different groups working from different definitions, but it is easier to just keep slapping a plaster on it and tying it with fraying string than it is to dismantle it all and start again. 🧪
From my pharmacology background: We do not know how antidepressants work. Or why so often they don't work.

Really. We don't. Not a clue. Loads of hypotheses though.

This is the longer version of the thing I was trying to say, which still is by no means everything I have to say in any direction. Do not try to infer or assume based on what I haven't said. You can ask me questions if you'd like to know. I will answer if I have the energy and am in the mood.
a lot of things are true.
the refusal to grasp this is a non-trivial amount of the problem

A really interesting article on the uses of DNA sequencing in ancient cemeteries, and how it can illuminate relationships and politics that are invisible without it.

I think about that a lot. There’s a very real sense in which that has guided my entire approach to Being Online. Why are we here, in this particular space? Why are our words important? How do we make our mark, how do we contribute?

Have a point or be funny, man. Ideally both, but at least one frfr.

For a few years on Twitter, I did a #HalloweenArchaeoloy series each October. I shared stories of interesting "spooky" things related to archaeology/anthropology. Trying it out here. This first entry is more folklore-related and regards Irish werewolves. 🏺
Faoladh: Werewolves of Ireland
The other day I was browsing Tumblr and I turned up a post on Irish werewolves. I knew Irish mythology and folklore had lots of shapeshifters, but I had never heard of werewolves. Better still, it tur...

First one comes out tonight, actually. Sorry for the delay. It's about Elon Musk.
Unless things dramatically change, I'm leaving journalism early next year. What's next, I'm not sure. I don't have skills or family connections or money or anything. But I've been working on my white whale stories to cap it off, big questions that have gone unanswered. First one comes out tomorrow.

Best argument I’ve heard so far …
but I’m still going to sleep on it before I cast the Final vote
#MinCup23
If Zircon's appeal rests in its longevity, surely the most appropriate outcome is for it to be an eternal MinCup runner-up. Constantly present, its never-changing status ensuring it's always a contender, never a champion...

Vote #Perovskite, so that Zircon gets what it deserves

ICYMI and are still undecided... googly trilobite eyes, seriously! #VoteTeamCalcite in #MinCup23 and if you already have, thank you!
Trilobites were the first creatures with eyesight and the only ones (we know of) with #Calcite lenses. Calcite concentrated dim light, and stalks gave trilobites a high, 3D view of the world around them.

Oh my god it's a close match but I believe calcite can pull ahead

There's the one that's cool in an "advanced sophisticated science" kind of way, and the one that's cool in an "intro to science, accessible to everyone" kind of way, and I'm going for the coolness of calcite here

I’m leaning toward calcite after the trilobite eye discourse. Have just returned from from the Yucatán and want to ask: Is that beautiful limestone peninsula with its cenotes a calcite dreamscape?

Also, would stromatolites be eligible in 2024?
