Mamdani got 1,036,051 votes and had 108,000 volunteers. One out of ten people who voted for him also built the campaign. Amazing.

All of us olds live in constant PTSD about Obama's campaign purposefully unwinding its volunteer army in 2009.

Good news: Mamdani's team says it's doing the opposite.

Here are a few things I’ve learned about how authoritarians exercise power. ( Sounds like David Brooks has finally read George Orwell's 1940 review of "Mein Kampf".)

Conspiracy theories are an easy way out, the fact that Americans freely voted for this monster is much more frightening and depressing than any conspiracy theory.
So retro that people are bringing up Russian bots again as a reason why people are bigoted dickheads as opposed to accepting that polls show that at least 30% of people are just always like this and always will be

EXCLUSIVE: One Saturday afternoon in October, my phone lit up with a notification.

I glanced down at the message.

“Anna, Lindsey Halligan here,” it began.

So began my text exchange with the woman who is prosecuting the president's perceived political enemies.

Once American democracy made it possible for a Black man to be elected president, American conservatives decided that it had to be destroyed
While Vought traces the “leftwing revolution” back a hundred years, to the progressive era, there is no question that the election of Barack Obama was a radicalizing moment for him and many key thinkers on the radical Right - as were the multiracial protests in the summer of 2020.

Republicans are behaving as if they will be in power forever, and nothing they do will be reversed.

Republicans are also assuming that if Democrats regain power, they will be too spineless to employ those same tactics against Republicans.

A common talking point in far right publications in the 1970s had to do with a bunch of Cold War executive orders laying out a range of “emergency powers” a POTUS could temporarily take on in a crisis. They used to say this was the blueprint for communist takeover. Turns out they were just jealous.
Trump's tweet that Portland is "war ravaged" just backfired. A Trump-picked judge cited it in blocking National Guard deployment to Portland, declaring him "untethered from facts."

I don't think pointing out the fascists' 'hypocrisy' is a good use of time. It's not hypocrisy, it's hierarchy. They actually do believe that they have the right and obligation to dominate you because they are superior to you. They are using their power not being hypocritical.

A couple of things in the latest Pew survey show how America got here.

8% of respondents never heard of Vice President J:D. Vance.

36% never heard of House Speaker Mike Johnson.

56% never heard of Senate Majority Leader John Thune.

Americans view Trump, Vance and congressional leaders in both parties more negatively than positively
Democrats now express more disapproval of their congressional leadership than they have in several decades.
