I work in one of these Midwestern history departments, which used to train _hundreds of high school history teachers every year_ and this year will graduate barely a dozen, in large part because we now have 1/2 the faculty we did 20 years ago and only one person specializing in history education.

Some Sportula stats for #AIASCS #AIASCS2024! This year, we raised and gave away over $23k, but we still have a backlog of 80(!) requests for #microgrants from #Classics students. More than half of our funds go towards covering basic living expenses. #ClassicsBlueSky #AncientBlueSky

I URGE all students of classics and ancient history (formal or otherwise!) to listen to Homer in audiobook format.
As Emily says, it’s not the same as oral tradition, but it cuts to something that Homer is, or at least is can and should be.

As many classicists have pointed out in response to Musk’s tweet, the modern audiobook is a *far* cry from the oral tradition of Homeric Greece. However, I do think that certain translations are particularly beneficial in audio format…

![I omit some material that's in the main tweet.] In addition to actively researching and publishing, job responsibilities include teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses, directing honors theses and eventually dissertations, and providing service to the department, college, and university. Applicants will be expected to play a substantial role in in charting the future directions of the Department and field through research, teaching, and service.
Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. no later than August 15, 2024.
Application Instructions
Applicants must upload:
a letter of interest;
a CV;
a sample of recent scholarship of no longer than 20 print pages;
a teaching portfolio which includes a table of contents and displays a variety of teaching interests and methodologies;
three letters of recommendation.
