Thrilled to see my co-founder Anthony Trasatti on this deep-dive podcast about the future of transit. They covered why now is the moment for public transport, what great transit should optimize for, how it interacts with rideshare, and the role of AVs.

I have a major piece in Bloomberg Citylab today. Should the US let transit fail, as Pennsylvania is already doing? And if not, what are the arguments we need to let it succeed?

Should We Let Public Transit Die?
Urban-rural hostility is fueling a public transportation crisis in US cities. But demands to abandon bus and train riders ignore the economic and social costs of cutting service.

the technical reason for this is that the MTA doesn’t conform to the GTFS-RT standard which means that when looking in the app you get phantom buses (buses that are in the static schedule but don’t exist in real time)
Really wish "the bus actually shows up when it says it will" was the policy everyone was going crazy for. NYC buses are pretty unreliable

Sprawl “solves” the housing crisis by turning it into a transportation crisis.
Not a single time in this article glorifying the need for sprawl to address the US's affordable housing crisis is there a mention of the vast transportation costs of sprawling living patterns. Nor is there mention of the fact that sprawl is directly linked to disinvestment in urban cores.
America Needs More Sprawl to Fix Its Housing Crisis
The word has become an epithet for garish, reckless growth — but to fix the housing crisis, the country needs more of it.

The actual "classist" statement is claiming, as Duffy did, middle class and low-income New Yorkers are “forced” onto the subways, while repeatedly referring to it as a "shithole" and showing your ignorance of urban policy by claiming driving must be the primary mode of transit. This guy is a moron.
Sean Duffy, Trump’s transportation secondary, slammed congestion pricing as “classist” where roads are only accessible by the “elites”
Mayor Adams stood next to him and didn’t defend the program.
Duffy remarks afterwards said that “some would say” the subway is a shithole
