Seems to me @leahshaffer.bsky.social deserves some kind of award for steadfastly sidestepping the fact that the person who developed the world's hottest chilli pepper is a Mr Currie. I, however, am not made of such strong stuff. (Also it's a great piece, go read it. Scroll up in the OP for a bonus.)
I've done some stories about capsaicin and interviewed the creator of reaper. Hot pepper eating is a safe "high" for people who have had substance abuse issues, is what he told me. Definitely makes you feel weirdly elated afterward. www.sciencehistory.org/stories/maga...
