I don’t really understand the people who think we shouldn’t situate the current moment in context of the last 25 years in American politics, including the actions of the three Democrats who were president during that time

Just going to keep saying it, it is remarkable (you can still be shocked without being surprised!) that the rest of the Republican party has decided that blatant corruption and enrichment off the office of the presidency is legal for this one guy

Cannot emphasize this enough.

On the whole, police don’t solve crimes for shit, and they don’t prevent crimes for shit. They are actively bad at both. The average Law & Order fan would be stunned to tears after following around real cops for a day.

Every American should read this ACLU lawsuit about what is happening in Los Angeles and California. It is the stuff of dystopian nightmares. This is not immigration enforcement. It is positively stuffed with videos and articles documenting racial profiling on a scale unseen since Jim Crow.

Embarrassed but not surprised at my alma mater @upenn.edu.

The heat wave can only but help Mamdani. Both bc it could lower turnout among older people, as @ericklinenberg.bsky.social rightly points out. & bc 100°, humid, sunny weather drenching voters in sweat might encourage people to give good climate policies more weight.

“That the ‘Appeal to Heaven’ flag is being flown on a government building alongside the American flag should be shocking to anyone who doesn't wish to live in a theocracy,” says Jon Lewis, a research fellow at the Program on Extremism at George Washington University.
Far-Right ‘Appeal to Heaven’ Flag Seen at Jan. 6 Riot Flown Above Government Agency in DC
The "Appeal To Heaven" flag, a popular symbol for Christian nationalists that was waved by January 6 rioters, was raised over the Small Business Administration headquarters last week.

I will be damned if I allow a bunch of Confederate-waving January 6th apologists give the American people a lecture on flag waving.

There is ZERO reason to enter an argument about patriotism with people who still worship traitors to America 150+ years later.

Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.

It's hard to overstate how destructive the reflexive "this is a distraction!" stuff that politicians and commentators and people are always peddling.

Everything is happening all at once. That's how authoritarianism works. If you can't navigate and synthesize this, you're not meeting the moment.
