Today 15 brave smallholder Kenyan farmers who appealed a Seed Act which criminalised them for saving, sharing&selling their own seeds won their case in the High Court.
Glad that my PhD findings were submitted in this case and assisted in the win. Here's a video of it!

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

The arrests of Don Lemon, Georgia Fort, and Jamael Lundy are unacceptable and a clear violation of the Constitution.

This is a dangerous abuse of power that threatens the rights of every single American.

They must be released immediately.

It simply doesn't work.

But the more effective solution, working with nature, landowners, and ecologists, creating watermeadows, rehabilitation of bogs, etc, is 'quiet' work.

It's harder to give them the opportunity to show how decisive they are.

The Irish political response to flooding is a big part of the problem.

The short electoral cycle means ministers want to be seen to 'act' and be decisive.

That's why they love diggers and concrete. Transforming our rivers into drains. Lots of opportunities for photoshoots - 'getting things done'

When people voted No to the EU Nice treaty changes 25 years ago the Govt. said it thought we were worried about EU military entanglements.
So to reassure us, they pledged to keep that law in place.
A pledge they repeated after the next EU treaty No in 2008.
They've decided to break their word.

The UN Charter outlaws armed aggression against another country. The Constitution of Ireland commits our country to abide by this rule.
That's why we have a law saying members of our DF can only be ordered into a foreign battlefield if the UN okays it.
Govt wants to change that to please .. someone.

One-sided discussion on Irish neutrality does not serve democracy

Dredging is a pet peeve of mine. I did a small research project in 2012 on invasive clams in the River Barrow. Our review of the literature was largely inconclusive on what to do, but the only thing we could recommend with certainty was "don't dredge". Of course this recommendation was ignored.
Flooding is only going to get more extreme as climate breakdown worsens.
It's so important that we don't let the most clueless people try to fix this by dredging and channelling...it only makes flooding worse but does make it look like there's lots of work being done.

We need landscape scale rewetting, we need swamps, bogs, and marshes, and we need to reconnect rivers with their floodplains in areas where it'll do less damage. Unfortunately we have had terrible politicians who use their role in the OPW as a way to look busy and serious, not actually fix anything
