I love to see a local business with its phone number on the sign with no area code. Real street cred right there. A pillar of the community.

Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

If you say that America is poised to institutionalize a police state - that the reality of concentration camps and regularized disappearances will become an ongoing facet of life - you'll still receive eye-rolls and clucked tongues. But that is not a possibility of this budget, it is the purpose.
this is the level of funding where all the possibilities for American politics that have been described as hyperbolic over the past decades - the comparisons to Nazi Germany and other nightmares of the 20th century - become logistically possible and politically likely
If the GOP reconciliation bill passes, ICE gets through FY2029:

- $45 billion for detention, on top of the current annual budget of $3.4 billion
- $14.4 billion for transportation and removal, on top of the current annual budget of $750 million
- $8 billion for hiring/retention
- Billions more.

Cannot emphasize in how many different ways Zohran Mamdani seems to have answered the questions Democrats have been asking since November, and the response has been "no not like that"

ICE *already* can't meet their detainment numbers without rounding up children, veterans, people born in the U.S., people with no criminal records, people at immigration hearings, plus academics and visitors with valid visas.

So who do they plan to detain with >10x the budget?

The answer is: you.

BREAKING: Mahmoud Khalil speaks out after being released from ICE detention.

"The Trump administration are doing their best to dehumanize everyone here," Khalil said.

The thing about the Khalil case is that it's very very good that he's free now but you can't have it take three months between "the government kidnaps you off the street for no basis reason whatsoever" and "a judge makes them let you go." You just can't.

It certainly seems like a problem that the most direct contact I have with the Democratic Party and its various affiliates is texting S to Stop.
the whole weird passive-aggressive tone of fundraising emails seems incredibly offputting to me and I wonder if there's any evidence that it actually works or it's just legacy stuff
Less than 24 hours after what may have been the largest mass protest in American history, my opponent's fundraising email "wonders":
"Maybe progressives are too tired to put up a fight."

This wasn't a joke or sarcasm.
It was a reaction to below-expectation fundraising.

Obama and Biden both failed to do anything about right wing extremists and the big change we need is someone willing to use the state to confront and dismantle their networks, including using state force. For this to be successful it won’t look very “liberal.”

It is 100% carrying water for the opposition to participate in this collective delusion that Dems for some reason need to answer for every teen who throws a rock rather than hold the Trump admin accountable for intentionally creating chaos and breaking the law to stoke violence.

They are in charge.

All of these violent, lawless ICE officers terrorizing communities and hiding their faces weren't just hired this year.

It's why dismantling ICE as an agency was so important and remains so. These people are unfit to be public servants if they hate the public.

for sociological reasons the public messaging from Democratic insiders about abandoning lines of conflict always pretends to be about strategy but it's important to be clear eyed that a core faction of Democrats are *ideologically* opposed to anything vaguely progressive
