The English word "clue" comes from the Ancient Greek story of Theseus & the Minotaur.

Theseus used a "clew" (Old English for 'ball of yarn') to guide him out of the Labyrinth.

So "clew" means 'ball of yarn', transformed by the story to its current meaning, 'that which helps solve a puzzle.'

I always find it interesting to see which words and phrases feel "modern". "Flabbergasted" was used in the C18, "windbag" in the C19, and "blabbermouth" in early C20. "Traipse" is C15. "Hanker", C17. But they're great, vivid words, which maybe is what "modern" connotes.

This might be the coolest thing I've seen on the internet in a while. You can put in a location and pick a date in history to see where on the Earth's surface that location was at that time (and how it was arranged).

We found a copy of Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations at the encampment. These kids are questioning Augustine's theory of language. They're getting into all kinds of gnomic aphorisms. They think that if a lion could speak we wouldn't understand it. Absolutely depraved stuff.

“You’ll never tame her,” they said. The vet. The shelter. The neighbors. The animal control guy. All agreed she was completely feral — born in the wild and never domesticated. Just got done giving her tummy rubs and received some nose kisses in return. I reckon they were wrong.

I never tire of saying so. And of people spelling out what an acronym means, as in "the arbitration and conciliation service ACAS".
#copyediting

FYI,* an acronym is an abbreviation that is pronounceable as a word—UNICEF, NASA, scuba, radar, etc.

*FYI is an initialism; one pronounces the letters. Also FBI, ATM, etc.

Some people call initialisms acronyms too, but I think that's confusing. YMMV.

Funny, but I've been waiting for someone to ask me what *does* make a run-on sentence, no one seems to be taking the bait.
As we all know, though sometimes we need to be reminded, a sentence can be as long as it needs to be—with all sorts of twists and turns, to say nothing of digressions and other asides—and not be a run-on sentence, and people who say otherwise (none of you, I trust) shouldn't be heeded.
Like people who complain that every long sentence is a run-on.
