*bangs table* CHAOS WITH ED MILIBAND
Verdict of one Labour grandee I just bumped into: “Ed Miliband is the person most likely to be the most next Prime Minister”.

This one seems to have got a lot of people who don't like cars very het up. They're arguing "well fine, fit them with trackers, why should drivers get away with speeding etc". This is a COLLOSAL mistake, and a perfect example of how you really need to think about unintended consequences first. 🧵
Year one: "We can work it out as an estimate"
Year two: "Oh, look, lots of people are dodging the system!"
Year three: "We need to fit mandatory trackers to every car in the country."
Year four plus: "Why shouldn't tracker data be used in evidence? What have people got to hide?"
I don’t think think “estimated road use” is right approach - at the least drivers should have the *option* of getting a black box fitted that just tracks their EVs usage, but come on, Mel, impersonate a serious politician!

Ban X in the UK. It's a misinformation factory.
Grok appears to have started offering this false account about eye-witnesses by generating its view from false rumours on X. It began by saying there wasn't evidence then picked up rumour and misinformation and amplified it

Yong people are broke bc they buy Starbucks daily ($42)

Became

bc they buy avocado toast in a sitdown restaurant weekly ($20)

Became

bc of a weekly to-go pastry ($6)

Will soon be

You're broke bc you buy one non-gruel item EVERY month

Even the inequality-absolving caricature is shrinkflating
“At the same time, more than half of Gen Z members say they are struggling to make ends meet, yet a majority buy themselves a small treat, such as a pastry, coffee, or sweet, at least once a week. That can lead to overspending…”

I'm not really sure what happened here. Twitter was declared dead because it was bought by a billionaire tech bro dickhead and ruined, so everyone decided the next social network to use was... another one owned by a billionaire tech bro dickhead?

Did I miss something along the way here?

Wow - those are quite phenomenal headlines given the details of the story.

Ahh look, he’s just a ‘nerdy’ guy. No harm done.

You need to scroll down to paragraph 13 of the Sky piece to find the full story!

I’m really starting to suspect that most of the tech bros haven’t actually read Tolkien, as they certainly don’t understand it.

The gentle hobbits save the “hard men” of Gondor, largely through compassion and selflessness. Not the other way around. The Christian parable is barely hidden!

today we landed a @svelte.dev feature i'm pretty stoked about — we call it 'forking', and it lets you run state changes offscreen and later choose whether to commit them (e.g. user hovers on a link, preload data in case they click)

It's increasingly obvious that Labour's strategy - call it Starmerism, Blue Labour, whatever - has got it badly wrong. It has alienated the party's core vote while failing to win over those leaning to Reform. There was no shortage of people warning them they were getting it wrong either.
Three years ago, Labour was polling in the 50s.

Python foundation said no and rejected the grant.

A lesson for the Labour Party - even if you deported a hundred thousand migrants, or five hundred thousand, Nigel Farage would just tell people you hadn't, and they'd believe him.
Yeah this makes me annoyed not because I am a grand defender of Biden's record on the border (I am not), but there is this utterly false perception that the Biden admin did nothing. That could not be further from the truth. The Biden admin carried out over 3 million repatriations in 4 years.
The plural of anecdote is not data, but I had a recent conversation with a left leaning, Trump disliking, reasonably well informed adult in Houston during which he spat blood about Biden’s complete failure to do anything at all about the border (”they didn’t do a damned thing!”)
