Absolutely tore through every episode of this show that we could find when we were researching the book. An astonishing resource and time capsule of gay New York before AIDS, its existence seems impossible today. Highly recommended. Gem after gem in terms of interview subjects.
If you are interested in old New York gay history, watch old episodes of The Emerald City, the first TV show made for gay and trans people. 1977, right before AIDS. My old film teacher Gene Stavis produced and interviewed in it. m.youtube.com/watch?v=2eQW...

Preach
No people on the planet will ever be AI. This is Orwellian bullshit. Zero people will ever be AI. This is no different from saying half the people in the country are television characters. Do not let anybody convince you that you don’t know the difference between a human being and a machine.
“We believe that in the near future half the people on the planet will be AI, and we are the company that’s bringing those people to life,” said CEO Jeanine Wright, who was previously chief operating officer of podcasting company Wondery

Happy birthday, Martha P.!
Happy birthday Marsha P. Johnson, visionary and fiery Black trans activist who birthed a movement. She’d by 80 today, and should still be alive.

Her legacy is one of revolutionary advocacy for global LGBTQ+ liberation. Her life is a testament to the need for sex worker rights & decriminalization.

If you're reacting to this thread with "Why isn't my opinion as valuable as any so-called critic's?" you are -- how shall I put this? -- the problem. You see a statement that a profession you're not in has value, and your first thought is "I'm being insulted!" You're how we got here.
It's profoundly saddening to read that AP will no longer be assigning or running book reviews because readers don't engage with them enough and they take too much effort to plan and assign. People complain about critics as gatekeepers; wait until all that's left is marketing.

Correcting language misapprehensions on social media is, like, a dream job.
If you’ve ever heard that

- The F-Word is an acronym for “Fornication Under Consent of the King”
- The Sh-Word is an acronym for “Ship High in Transit”
- Any other older word being an acronym

It’s untrue.

Acronyms are, by and large, a 20th-century phenomenon.

You say journalism is dead.

I say the Washington Post profiled a nudist retreat in West Virginia and managed to find a man named Dewey Butts III.

This is why we need public broadcasting.

I'm sure that some people find it traumatizing, but the day I realized I was never going to read everything worth reading was absolutely spirit-lifting, plus it gave me permission* to reread things I love a half dozen (or far more, I'm looking at you, Up the Down Staircase) times.

What's your favorite Bette Davis movie that's not All About Eve?

Maybe “Now, Voyager,” but probably definitely “The Little Foxes”

This is literally exhibit A for why queer joy is so profoundly subversive. Anger is important too. But joy -- "smiling and talking and crying and laughing" -- that's what the fascists want to stamp out. That's the real challenge to their reign.

A hallmark of conspiracy theories is obsession with cover-ups and "censorship" over actual evidence of their core claims.

If kids were being rushed into surgeries, these articles would show it! Instead they are relitigating arcane academic drama about a review not getting published.
