Closing Thoughts Even though I may have procrastinated until the second to last day of 2025 to do this, there was no question in my mind that I would do a recommended reading writeup. As a writing community, we need connection and mutual support more than ever, and this is my way of showing love to these writers and the presses (themselves labors of love) that bring these books into being. Thank you. Your work has been here with me, in my writing space, close to my heart, all throughout this ridiculous and difficult year. What do any of us do this for, except to help others feel a bit more human? With these books, you have done that for me. I should add that, selfishly, a writeup like this also serves me! Reading and looking critically at other people’s work is an essential part of my own writing process. It forces me to think about what I’ve been reading and talk about why good work works (one of the most fruitful and perennial questions as far as I’m concerned). And lastly, before I hit publish and send these words off to be data-scraped, I did this thinking with my own human brain and I enjoyed it. This is what the peddlers of slop and slopmaking machines will never understand: they cannot replicate this, and they fundamentally misunderstand what we’re about here. Creativity and thinking are cornerstones of my experience as a human being, and I will never outsource them. Keep on making excellent things. F*ck fascism and f*ck “AI”. Love and health to all of you in the new year.

The cycles of video game play and resistance/revolution structure Summer Farah’s chapbook I Could Die Today and Live Again, built around the characters and conceits of Legend of Zelda. These poems leverage some of the key motifs of recent and classic Zelda games — battles fought over generations, lost champions, lost land, the reset of “blood moons” — to talk about Palestinian identity and resistance against empire and annihilation. Farah’s poems defy conventional use of the page space, with words turning sideways, crowding in a multigenerational cacaphony, or forming the Triforce symbol. The familiar NPC refrain “Do you need me to repeat that?” recurs through the book with the power to make you laugh, then gasp, then cry. Do yourself a favor and read up now — Farah’s first full length collection is forthcoming in 2026.
