Proofs of my book are at YALC this weekend!! Alas I am in Glasgow, but thinking fondly of my book living it up in London. Maybe it will go see Hadestown.

If you have a writer in your life and you'd like them to know that you care about their ambitions, may I suggest ordering a copy of my collaborative craft anthology, An Honour And A Privilege, as a Christmas present? (trust me, you'll get the MOST brownie points)
"I spent a while trying to figure out how to classify An Honour & a Privilege. Viewed through one lens it might not seem an important question: classification is mostly helpful for shelving decisions. But genre also dictates how one reads a thing. Whether you think of this book as an anthology (many authors), a collection (one common author), or a craft book (the reflective duets) may affect your perception of the whole. I struggle to compare this work to any of those three genres. The project in front of you reveals more about its craft than other anthologies. It's more authentically connected to strong exemplar material than other craft books. It's more heteroglossic than any collection I recall. The best way to think of An Honour & a Privilege may be to regard it as a genre all its own, one which depends significantly on its many interconnections, one which marks both an occasion and an invitation, one which offers us both a testimony as to what can be done together and a guide on how to do it." When Death decided he wanted a child, he plucked a ghost orchid from the furthest edge of the world – the kind of flower that could survive in the dark indeterminate edges between life and death – and grew her from its roots. Born from blackened soil, Daughter Death was a quiet baby. She simply gazed upwards and watched the sky, the roots of the above-world trailing through the whorl of obsidian clouds. Her eyes were round and silver like the coins gifted for the dead, and her smile was a crescent-moon, a sliver peeking light into the darkness. When she looked upon her father and reached out with chubby little hands to grab the skeletal ridges of his face, Death was immediately besotted.

Glaswegians, did you know the library has a decent app (better than the website) where you can request books from any city library be sent to your local one for pickup? There's also a barcode scanner which lets you check in the bookshop if they have the book in the libraries. Really useful!

Thinking about these beaut Allen & Unwin LOTR volumes I saw yesterday. Perfect covers.
Three 1974(estimate) editions of LOTR volumes. The two towers on the left, the fellowship of the ring in the middle, and the return of the king on the right. The covers all have the same eye of Sauron in the middle, bordered by a yellow ring and the elven inscription around that.

The British Library has long relied on the good will of its fabulous staff, whom it treats shockingly, pays derisorily and ignores as much as it can. Faced with a contemptible 2.6% pay offer, the staff has, unsurprisingly, had enough.
