Hello everyone! I've gained quite a few followers over the past two days. Some familiar faces; others brand new.

Expect posts about deafness, British Sign Language, museums, art, books, films, TV shows – essentially, whatever I'm thinking about at the time!

Alice is the gold standard of what Twitter was when it was great - how you could just find these brilliant, remarkable people with the kind of voices that rarely get platformed or taken seriously, and hear about their lives in their own words without intruding on them or demanding emotional labor
Watching disabled people around the world mourn Alice is a reminder of the good aspect of the internet. 30 years ago, few people outside of SF would ever have known Alice existed. I never would have met her. The internet connected us all. Let’s honor Alice’s memory by using that power and community.
My social media is wall-to-wall love for the incomparable Alice Wong, and I need more words. What captures sadness and/also affection for a community that knows what's been lost?

‘Death remains my intimate shadow partner. It has been with me since birth, always hovering close by. I understand one day we will finally waltz together into the ether. I hope when that time comes, I die with the satisfaction of a life well-lived, unapologetic, joyful, & full of love.’

I have been confronted with an ad for Advent calendars and so it is time for the annual PSA:

THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS BEGIN

ON

CHRISTMAS

THEY ARE NOT ANY OF THE DAYS LEADING UP TO CHRISTMAS

THAT IS ADVENT

WHICH BEGINS FOUR SUNDAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME

It's good practice to lead with what you are doing rather than with what others aren't. Share what you are doing and invite others to join you.

I had a surprise hearing test this morning, and it made me wonder what a hearing tests sound like to those with perfect hearing. Like do you get a lil gap in between a set of beeps like I do? Or is that just the deafness lol

once again profoundly exhausted by the framing of autism, and disability in general, as something to fight against, prevent, and scare people about. it is extremely objectifying

We're 300 followers away from 70,000. 300 more would be really nice. But you know what would be even better? 300 plus 30,000.

My favorite linguist Jon Henner (who followed me on here before he passed!) changed my perspective a lot. If communication is happening, who cares how it's presented? “How you language is beautiful. Don't let anyone tell you your language is wrong. Your languaging is the story of your life.”
As someone who was an English Major and teaches English in real life, I don't understand the point of feeling the need to correct people's grammar on social media. Mistakes happen sometimes on here, why should someone delete and rewrite their whole post for small typos or grammar errors 😭

We need to teach people the difference between being uncomfortable and being unsafe. Because the discomfort of the safest people is endangering the most vulnerable, all day every day.

The most easily accessible cinema to me has turned into a Vue, meaning I am treated to one captioned showing per week.

And just to be clear, I don't mean per film. I mean one captioned showing per week full stop.

Train travel is also incredibly stressful for deaf people. Last minute platform changes announced on a loudspeaker? Not knowing what is happening as everyone starts running? Genuinely awful.
“but if you don’t need that disabled service you shouldn’t use it!”

listen, i have been to 4 different NHS trust audiology departments and not one of them has a screen, every one just calls patients over a speaker. every one.
