A lot of the ASA-erati attended the @americansoccerinsights.com summit at Rice University last week, and people wanted to talk about their experience.

So we convened the ASA roundtable for highlights.

ASA Roundtable: American Soccer Insights Summit — American Soccer Analysis
At the end of January, many members of our ASA Community headed down to Rice University in Houston to talk a whole lot of soccer analytics. ASA Slack was buzzing around so much we figured we’d convene...

Had a ton of fun joining the guys and Chloe Dhillon on this pod. Huge thanks to @xowngoals.com for inviting me on!
We had so much fun at the @americansoccerinsights.com Summit last year, we had to come back for another live pod! We were joined by @catabush.com and Houston Dash analyst Chloe Dhillon for a great talk about the state of data in the women's game, for the public and for teams. Enjoy!

It's been a really brutal start to the year for soccer fans. This is a very good piece on another piece of really bad news: the data all your favorite (and crucially, favorites-to-come) woso writers use has been scattered to the wind
Last week, I posted a small survey that looked at FBref alternatives in an attempt to assess what resources remain for women’s soccer fans. For @theixsports.bsky.social, I expanded that survey, and the results are grim. Here’s what that means for the future of woso data and coverage:
For The IX Soccer, @catabush.com wrote about the importance of access to analytics and why FBref losing Opta data is a huge blow for women's soccer coverage.

Our very own Cat Bush with some very impressive writing! While the circumstances suck it’s great to see the response by the woso community towards opta here

. @catabush.com nails it: The FBRef shutdown is a blow to all soccer, but women's soccer bears the much larger burden.

The only reason I was able to prove my skills and get hired by Angel City is because SB Nation had a content partnership with StatsBomb. There are probably a dozen people who are smarter and harder working than I am who don't even know where to get started now. It sucks a lot.

For The IX Soccer, @catabush.com dug into just how much the recent loss of advanced stats on FBref hurts accessibility of women's soccer data. (Turns out, a lot.) Come for the stylish bar graphs, stay for the overview of the new women's soccer data landscape:
Loss of FBref advanced stats is disaster for women’s soccer data - The IX Sports
After Opta forced FBref to pull certain statistics, the disparity between men’s and women’s soccer coverage has become more pronounced.

I 100% support throwing any negotiating power behind the sell on. Once the fee hit 3m, there’s no point in pushing for more.
$3.5m and a 20% sell-on is great work for a guy who's entering the final year of his deal and could leave for free 12 months from now (sign a pre-contract in the summer).

Doubly so b/c they don't win a title last year – and make literally $10m extra on the way to it – if they'd sold him last summer
@mattdoyle.bsky.social Thoughts on the Obed Vargas deal for a rumored 3M? Feels a bit like like the sounders dropped the ball here. I kept hearing about a big payday once he sold, but they waited too long and now can barely get anything for him. Or am I reading the tea leaves wrong?

One day I’ll write something that properly explains what @americansoccerinsights.com has done for me, but until then: big love to the community cultivated there. It’s unbelievable, and everyone who turns up makes that room (and the bar afterwards) a special place. Some weekend!

It's really hard to understate how grateful I am for an event like @americansoccerinsights.com. This past weekend was extraordinary and it wouldn't have been possible without the Summit. The content was exceptional and now I have to comb through 5+ pages of notes lol.

Waibel is doing a good job of not moneyballing too close to the sun
Keeping Obed on the roster in 2026 makes the Sounders a better team, but I think getting a fee is more important from a narrative perspective.

If the Sounders get even as much as $3M+20% sell-on it has to be considered a huge win. If they also get him back on loan … it’s a genuine master-stroke.

Can't even begin to say thank you to all that came out to ASI. This is maybe the first if not the biggest showing of @americansocceranalysis.com present cast and alums we've ever had in a room.
