A rare interview with the creators of the always-funny, always-brilliant, and *usually*-sexy—or occasionally anti-sexy—OGLAF!

Cooper has kept a low profile over the years, but is legitimately one of the very best artists in comics today. Read OGLAF if you're old enough to drive!
Talking Oglaf with Trudy Cooper and Doug Bayne: 'We'd stay up all night drawing stuff to make each other laugh' - The Comics Journal
Other than some time off every year for Christmas, Trudy Cooper and Doug Bayne have delivered a new Oglaf comic, skewering fantasy tropes with absolutely not safe for work humor, every week since 2008...

something that’s great about having a nanny dog who’s obsessed with the toddler and up in his business all the time is that now when little guy sees a dog outside he doesn’t want to pet them, he’s like no I’m good dogs are annoying

If you aren't seeing skeets from some of your fave people, they might have been labeled "Rude" by bsky mods. Idk what they are thinking, I don't need a mommy to tell me who to be buddies with. Anyway, go into Settings > moderation > bluesky moderation (advanced) and turn Rude off.

maybe I'm different but if I were a C-suite I would simply treat the workers contributing to my success as though they were worthy of my respect and gratitude instead of as an annoyance

I have seen talented, hardworking people forced to leave projects because the entire team is too afraid to initiate conflict with a single volatile individual. It seeps into every aspect of the work - and nobody does their best work when they’re afraid.
if you wanna be mercenary about it bc you're allergic to soft and nice things: having a miserable teammate breaks feedback funnels and slows production. they break communication channels. people spend valuable time and energy tiptoeing around a volatile team member.

bad attitudes are expensive.
I truly can't stress this enough: No one's art is good enough to justify them being miserable to work with. Almost everyone I've worked with has been wonderful, but the handful of folks that weren't brought the whole team down by being egotistical, sexist, condescending, etc.

I've been trying to get my version of the Bechdel Test to catch on called the Ballard Metric. It basically asks if the creator was able to work for free or for slave wages due to an invisible financial safety net and recontextualizes the work. (I'm kinda joking idk)
Many full time creatives have “invisible safety nets” like bread-winning partners, trust funds, external support, etc. No shame on anyone, but it creates a false vision of success. The cost of going to cons alone on top of hoping to eat as a freelancer are untenable, IMO.
When people hear that I'm returning to part time work they often ask "are things not going well with your art?"

The problem really is things are going well, but the world is so unstable that I long for some consistency and income that I don't have to pay quarterly taxes on
