I am kind of sitting here mouth agape as I realize that the thing that really got eight Democrats to cave was a provision which provides backdoor criminal and civil immunity to them personally by making it functionally impossible to ever investigate the Senate
read the actual bill text and this is quite literally a provision designed solely to impede civil and criminal investigations into United States Senators and their staff. www.appropriations.senate.gov/imo/media/do...

“the core emotional attachment for [the reactionary center] is of being above the political struggle and effortlessly able to synthesise the ideas of the left and right into something better, that always mysteriously appears to be the status quo"
Today's article is about a form of bad-faith speech somewhat akin to bullshit, which I'm calling (because why not) wank. I don't quite think I've focused the ideas down as much as I can, but I think it says some interesting things regardless:
An essay on wank | deadSimpleTech
This captures well the uncomfortable, slightly disorienting feeling that wank creates when you're subjected to it, wherein you're expected to speak about and think about the statement as though it say...

a key reason they see an opening for such a blatant speech crackdown is that they already did one to Palestinian and anti-genocide activists and it got enthusiastic bipartisan approval

A grim reminder: these people will never be satisfied. There’s no point at which they will say “we’ve won, let’s enjoy life.” They will always be looking for someone else to punish, to revile, to dehumanize. They’re empty without that.

As an American journalist, I really wish the institutions that trumpet a free press had more to say about this administration funding the assassination of our comrades
Barely an hour ago, Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif warned us all:

“If this madness doesn’t end, Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its people’s voices silenced, their faces erased — and history will remember you as silent witnesses to a genocide you chose not to stop.”

Israel just killed him.

the thing about "drain the swamp" is that Trump was able to replace special interest lobbyists and foreign agents as the focus of anti-corruption ire with dedicated public servants who do things like maintain school, hospital, and library infrastructure.
What I've seen with the people in my life is really tough. These are people who committed to serving the common good, usually for less pay than they'd get elsewhere. They're often completely invisible to the general public, but do essential work.

These protests were used a pretext for clamping down on civil rights
Encouraging to see Canada participating in this attempt by major democracies to restrain Netanyahu and compel a ceasefire and renewed peace process, in the absence of a constructive U.S. role in doing so. We'll see if this is backed with actions
