So for Dems, the win is: reiterating 3 things that are already law, 1 thing that is a best practice, and 1 thing that was already a rule up until 6 months ago?

From the bottom of my heart: fuck off with this.

And they didn't even include ICE out of hospitals, healthcare facilities and daycares.
Dems coalescing around 5 restrictions on ICE, I'm told:

DHS required to cooperate with state probes (big)
CBP stays at border
warrants for arrests
IDs, bodycams
ICE out of churches, schools

"That package unites a lot of Dems," Sen Chris Murphy tells me on the pod:

As Trump scrambles to contain the damage from the latest ICE horrors, Senator Chris Murphy offers a sharp indictment of Trump-ICE lawlessness—and explains how Dems can meet the urgency of the moment.

Looks like elites are updating their view of public opinion on immigration bc of recent events. They’re right, but late. Polls have shown Trump underwater on immigration since last summer, esp on deportations. Some of us have been saying this for a while! www.nytimes.com/2026/01/27/u...
On Immigration, the G.O.P. Finds Itself in a Shocking Place: On Defense
Since President Trump’s rise, the issue has been a strength for the party. But now, after the chaos in Minnesota, Democrats see an opening and some Republicans worry that Mr. Trump is going too far.

many people have fully embraced a timeline in which President Joe Biden lost re-election in 2020 due to his handling of covid policy, backlash to his woke policies, and his "defund the police" agenda.
Who won in 2020 is as hard a question for people like this as who was president in 2020. Lord grant me a slogan that results in electoral results like 2020.

But also: any slogan for change will be demonized by the right wing. You cannot pick the perfect words. So do what you believe in.

Once again it looks like Schumer is about to choke after getting a massive opportunity.

So pathetic and weak.

The testing ground for Bovino’s Operation At Large was Los Angeles. A California judge initially prohibited ICE/CBP’s most flagrant constitutional violations. SCOTUS overruled her 6–3, handing Bovino a blank check to inflict unspeakable brutality on Chicago and Minneapolis. The 6 bear so much blame.
BREAKING Greg Bovino has been removed as Border Patrol "commander at large" and will return to El Centro Calif, where he is expected to retire soon. A stunning turnaround after Pretti killing. Bovino's traveling blue city crackdown is over www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...

A lot of people listen to the centrist strategists and “analysts” who wrongly argued Democrats shouldn’t talk about immigration because it would help Trump or some shit. You do have to wonder how that shaped Dem behavior in Congress, & how things could’ve been different w/ different info streams
The Democratic commentators, "strategists," and data bros who've been counseling appeasement of Trump's fascism need to take responsibility for how unbelievably fucking wrong they were.

For history tells us that appeasement signals weakness, encourages escalation, and accelerates freedom's end.

The killing of Alex Pretti and the grotesque lying was an overreach by the administration. They've paid a price and had to pull back a bit. But it's when there's some disarray that the democratic opposition needs to intensify the offensive, and turn a marginal tactical success into a major victory.

Trump backing down to public pressure is a good thing. But let's be clear. Noem, Miller, Bovino, etc. all followed his lead. He called protesters terrorists. He dehumanized Somali immigrants. He lied about Good and Pretti. He owns all of it.

He'll also probably change his mind tomorrow.
ABC: Noem said Pretti committed an act of domestic terrorism. Stephen Miller labeled him a domestic terrorist. Does the president agree?
