In 2024, Bet 365's CEO got a salary - not total package, just salary - of £94.7m.

A lot of people have to lose their bets to pay that.

We should be MASSIVELY curtailing betting, not promoting it further. It's a cancer in society.
You may have missed this gem yesterday. From which we learn that:

1. Betting shops are really good for the mental health of isolated people.
2. Most drug-takers are not a problem.
3. Kids put tuppence in slot machines in the hope of getting rich.
4. Farage probably has a gambling industry donor.

Trump claims that food stamps "puts the country in jeopardy. People that are able-bodied can do a job, they leave their job because they figure they can pick this up, it's easier."

1/ Michael Prescott of Hanover Communications, whose leaked memo alleging left-wing bias led to the BBC meltdown.

You could be forgiven for thinking that a corporate lobbyist & former Murdoch press hack may not have the best interests of public-service broadcasting at heart.

I barely watch it. The news is appalling. Not much of the output grabs me, and I generally stick to streaming services or my blu-ray collection these days.

But would I bin it? Nope. It's incredibly valuable, still has a huge audience and the problems with it's current affairs dept can be sorted.
Can't believe there are conversations about ending the BBC. This is like listening to a family calmly discussing whether to shoot it's dog, or burn down the house.

Denying Trump the thrill he gets from successful domination is key. Don't kowtow, don't bend the knee. Push back.

Because once Trump smells weakness, he will be back for more.

If Starmer is not capable of this, we are in serious trouble.

I think I do understand it but none of it reflects well on them.
They are terrified. Terrified of the right wing media, terrified of Farage and most of all, terrified of Trump.
Everyone in this govt will look back in 20 years and regret their cowardice. But that's how cowardice works isn't it?
I do not understand the Labour government's reticence over defending the BBC and social media regulation. Their long-term survival basically depends on it. Their cowardice in the face of it may be the single thing they are most remembered for.

I have to admit I have been guilty of this too. I was so desperate for the Tories to lose in 2024 I spent no time at all thinking about what it would mean for Labour to win. I did think stuff could just be managed post-election. I now know how wrong I was.
IMO the worst thing about this government is its failure to see Trump, Farage, anti-immigration rhetoric, rising racism, and the 'gender critical' lobby as connected elements of a global war against liberalism and social democracy – and instead treating them as discrete issues to be 'managed'.

Much of the problem on both sides of the Atlantic, is that the nationalist Right barks loudly, and institutions, politicians and journos immediately roll over and show their bellies in response.

Honestly, I did NOT have "punching the air and going HELL YES to Chris Patten" on my bingo card today. But what he says is SO rarely said and needed saying SO badly!

"How shall we treat Mr Farage's concerns? Shall we hail Brexit a tremendous success? Something that has cost the country billions?"
SUPERB and angrily unvarnished response, by former BBC chairman, Lord Patten.

"I don't think that we should allow ourselves to be bullied into thinking that the BBC is only any good, if it reflects the prejudice of the last person who shouted at it." ~AA

Not unpersuasive, this theory.
The assumptions of the neolib, 'end of history' era fell apart in the global financial crisis. But rather than try and build something new, we forced austerity onto the people who had done the least to cause the GFC in order to restore the exact system that caused it.
What if... it wasn't the short-20th-century that ended in 1989, but the long-20th-century that ended in 2008.

Labour today: "We're going to bin the two child benefit cap"

Rightwing media: *erupts*

Labour tomorrow: "We misspoke yesterday. We're actually cancelling all child benefits, and deporting all children who have received any government benefits."

What we're seeing on both sides of the Atlantic, is the Right's dodgy will to power. It sounds cheesy, but that's exactly what it is. They fully believe that power is their natural due and they behave accordingly.

The Left doesn't believe this at all.

And it shows.

We are now seeing here the kind of attacks on institutions that have become the norm in the United States.

They will not be satisfied until they have burned down civil society. Cowardice in the face of these attacks will abet them. Starmer and Labour need to shit or get off the pot.
