This is my favorite thing Drew has ever made. I read it page-by-page as he was writing it, a couple times when he was laying it out and proofreading it, and probably 4 or 5 more times since then. Everything he's made since Veins has been a victory lap, IMO.

Veins by DREW I started doing slogans when I was 18. That's just a phrase you say to advertise someone's company. They're free to make, but they're worth a lot if you get the right one. For example, "It's cold. It's dessert. We call it ice cream." That works for any ice cream company. Or you can make a specific slogan like "Take a bite out of life. Apple Computer." The logo of Apple has a bite in it, so it's perfect. Every company needs a slogan so you remember them. Even regular things like lamps need a slogan. A lot of people probably think lamps are no big deal, but wait until it gets dark outside. Then you really appreciate them. A hundred years ago when it got dark, we would just have to go to bed, but not now. "Thanks, Lamps." That's a lamp slogan. "Don't live half your life in the shadows." That's another one they could use. In Finland, they only have sun half of the year, and they get depressed. It can happen to anyone. Companies like Apple or lamp companies can afford to spend money on slogans, because it's all profit. You don't need anything special to make a lamp. All you need is a lightbulb and a dream. Put quotes around that, because it's another great slogan. Bug spray is really expensive, so I tried to catch some spiders and put them in my apartment, to be natural predators. I only got 6 spiders, and after I put them under my bed, all they did was make spiderwebs. I had to pull all the spiderwebs I found (they are gross and make your apartment look dirty) but they kept making more every day. I got tired of pulling them, so I squashed the spiders I could find and looked on the internet to find other predators. When I searched online it said the main predator of bugs was lizards, but I didn't want to get them. Lizardwebs would be even worse (because they are bigger than spiders) and I didn't want to be sitting at home and have them stare at me with their dead eyes. You don't know if they are going to just snap and bite you, or s---- on your bed, because they don't have eyebrows, or emotions. I still don't like swimming. When I drive by the water park I start feeling nervous like someone's going to yell at me. They'll take my glasses, and they'll put me on the slide, and when I get to the bottom I can't find my glasses, and I'm cold, and my skin is poisoned. Swimming for me is like going to a store, and as soon as you walk in, they put a blindfold on you and spray Raid. Then, when you get back home, everyone tells you "I love that store."

Yes, Russell Mills' art for The Downward Spiral era was transformative for me, but the design choices of Gary Talpas on TDS were just as significant. I wrote about it a bit here: www.patreon.com/posts/89855211
All of which is to say that in terms of "setting the table" for the music, the understated title treatment and minimalist design of The Downward Spiral was every bit as important as the dirt and decay of Russell's textural cover art. Nine Inch Nails circa 1993/1994 was considered (and dismissed as) a "heavy metal" or "hard rock" band to the masses, known for the ear-shredding sounds and violent imagery of Broken, and of course their famously intense concerts. But Nine Inch Nails was always more than that, and The Downward Spiral more than anything before it was a masterpiece album that contained a wide spectrum of emotions. It was not a "heavy metal" album, it was a showcase of how noise and rage and sadness and lust can all be woven together in a complex tapestry where the whispers are as important as the screams. And the album cover's role was to prepare you to experience a work of art. As a kid, I was fascinated by the quietness of that design, how much it stood in contrast to the loudness within and also to the abrasive, "edgy," often garish designs associated with "hard rock" albums. There was no logo, no big in-your-face title, no "cool" photo of the band with their guitars looking tough. No flames, no chain link fences, no jagged grunge fonts, no fisheye lens. It felt less like it belonged in a CD rack and more like it belonged in a museum, the clean tasteful title text invoking a title card next to a piece of fine art on a gallery wall. It very purposefully demanded that you see the music in a different light, that you do not dare to presume this is just a collection of head-bangin' rock tunes. And it certainly must have been confusing for bros who just wanted to hear more of that "fuck you like an animal" song they liked from the radio.
