One small thing I hope comes out of this nightmare is at least renaming the Department of Homeland Security. “Homeland” is not a word Americans use. It sounds like a translation from Heimatsicherheitsabteilung.

If you're wondering why the New York Times is the way it is, I'm listening to one of their podcasts and heard ads from the American Petroleum Institute

If you work for ice please understand that your kids will laugh at a character based on you dying in an action movie before the end of the decade. They’ll be in movies for really little kids. Like Phineas and Ferb shit. There will be an action figure of you with a detachable head

It gets overlooked a lot because it's a very obvious point, but at any moment, less than a few dozen Republicans could end this national disgrace.

The fact that they won't further proves that America does not have a problem with Trump, we have a problem with the Republican Party.
Trump says he'll impose a 10% tariff (rising to 25% in June) on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland, because they've sent people to Greenland, until the US can buy Greenland.

I'm again calling out Newsom for misleading people on California's population growth

Population is growing again but only because natural increase (births-deaths) is greater than net migration, which is still negative

Yet here Newsom again implies that our population growth is due to people moving
California population:
2010: 37.2 million
2024: 39.4 million

Stop misleading people.

California’s population is growing — has been for 3 years — choose another symptom of California Derangement Syndrome!

The greatest website in history is now a quarter-century old. Happy birthday to the goat
wikipedia turns 25 today! the last unenshittified major website! backbone of online info! triumph of humanity! powered by urge of unpaid randos to correct each other! somehow mostly reliable! "good thing wikipedia works in practice, because it sure doesn't work in theory" - old wiki adage

i hate that we talk about "the union army" in the civil war. it was the army of the united states of america against an evil and illegal pro-slavery band of terrorists. the confederacy was illegitimate from top to bottom.
Hell, I would love to see a change to the curricula in public schools to teach the Civil War (accurately) as the Slaver Rebellion of 1861.

This is the dynamic across most of America: Liberal cities generate revenue, which state governments then transfer to benefit conservative rural areas, whose residents despite city-dwellers and consistently vote to harm them. But politicians endlessly pander to rural voters and demonize cities.
Another critical piece of missing context in this story: tax dollars flow from the MSP metro to rural Minnesota. People in the city subsidize the lifestyles of people living in the country minnesotareformer.com/2023/12/04/t...

Today, the Metro Planning and Programming Committee voted to move forward Modified Alternative 5 as the Locally Preferred Alternative for the Sepulveda Transit Corridor.

Senate Democrats absolutely have to shut the govt down to stop this ICE insanity in the Twin Cities. This is not sustainable & cannot be normalized. Any Democratic vote to provide money to the thugs who are brutalizing this community is a grave betrayal to the people here. Accountability can't wait.

Chad E-biker: free from corporate overlords; can ride where cars can’t drive; is not scared of cities
E-bikes are optimal antifascist tactical gear
I have a lengthy video of a long chase yesterday, including one maniacal e-bike rider who was absolutely giving the ICE Wagoneers hell. They’d try to lose us in traffic but the bike didn’t care about traffic

This. Xenophobic, close-minded, ass-backwards nation states rely on fertility rates to prevent decline. But open, cosmopolitan, liberal democracies can use immigration to continue growing both in terms of population and power.

The US is the best example of the latter- if we choose to be.

There's something about how we think about fertility where just making our population younger doesn't count but actually it does.

Just ease immigration for 18-30 year olds.
Nobody really wants to hear this but the only even remotely palatable solutions to the "birthrate crisis" involve penciling in substantial technological change: artificial wombs, at least somewhat automated childcare, etc

Democrats underestimate this at their own peril, and at the expense of every American.
Democrats need to realize ICE isn’t just—or even primarily—a mass deportation force.

ICE is also Trump’s most loyal internal security force which will be used to attack regime opponents and try to steal the election. They should defund his authoritarian capabilities.

Bad news: It looks like Democrats in the NJ State Senate have passed S4834, which requires insurance and registration for all e-bikes. Vote was Yes: 28 No: 10 Not Voting: 2. Companion bill likely to get vote in state assembly today. www.njleg.state.nj.us/bill-search/...

(2) The state should impose a default zoning code and take over all entitlement/permitting from offending jurisdictions through the remainder of the RHNA cycle, as well as all associated application fees. In extreme cases, disincorporation or amalgamation should be on the table.

California housing law is so strange. We impose an avalanche of rules and planning mandates on cities. Good actor cities (who were going to build anyway) comply at great cost, while bad actor cities (who actually need to be forced to build) ignore all of it and nothing happens.

There should be some type of state review board that is solely focused on “is this rule stupid?” If the board determines the rule is stupid, it can be ignored.
These rooftop rain collectors are often functionally required of dense buildings by water quality regulators in the Bay Area. They’re insanely costly because you often have to pump water TO the roof to store it, and then insurance companies price in increased water-related risk. It’s terrible.
I worked in this building, and I feel sorry for OpenAI peeps. Some clueless architect decided it would be "green" to have a rainwater collector on the roof. Said water drains in uninsulated pipes through open-air offices, chilling the office no matter the weather. www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco...

This drives home a key point about immigration: not only are the ICE raids disgusting and cruel, but they make America weaker and less dynamic. If not for immigration, we would see population *decline* in only 5 years

Not just slower growth, straight up decline. We need immigration, and more of it.
Without immigration, US population will soon shrink, per CBO www.cbo.gov/publication/...
