Here to build great cities

📍Downtown Los Angeles
Pinned
Today, I have become an Angeleno.
At first I was shocked to see only 10% of Americans are more excited than concerned about AI with 50% being the opposite, seemed far too pessimistic. But now I see the question asked about use "in daily life" so this is fair. I.e. you consider chatbots but not drug discovery and scientific research
Finally, concern does seem to be rising, though that might also reflect growing awareness ("have heard nothing" went from 15% in 2022 to 5% in 2025)

So excited for what this committee learns and accomplishes. Modular housing is an absolutely necessary piece to making housing affordable and abundant.

Thank you so much to Assemblymember @buffywicks.bsky.social for your leadership here!
California has made real progress on land use and permitting — but we still aren’t building housing at the scale we need.

One reason: the way we build homes hasn’t kept pace with innovation. That’s what our new Select Committee is focused on.

OMG Senator @scottwiener.bsky.social is doing the balcony solar thing I heard about on the @volts.wtf podcast!!!
I'm so excited to be introducing TWO new energy affordability bills today!

There should have been an effort to expel the ~140 reps who still voted against certifying the 2020 election results even after the failed coup under the 14th Amendment's insurrection clause. Dem. leadership's failure to treat the GOP as the domestic enemy that it is has doomed us for decades.
Five years ago today, the United States Capitol was attacked in a violent insurrection incited by the President of the United States for one purpose: to overturn a free and fair election and cling to power in clear violation of the Constitution.

Congestion pricing = policy miracle
Would work great around DTLA too
The latest numbers are in: Congestion pricing cut 27M car trips in 2025.
Commutes got faster
Streets got safer
And business went up

Los Angeles should congestion-price its freeways to maintain peak throughput at times of high demand.

They are putting Americans’ safety in danger while destabilizing the region to enrich themselves.

Congress must act, and Trump must be impeached.

Just an annoying reminder that the unquenchable American thirst for oil, and the conquest and subjugation of other nations in futile attempts to satiate it, is brought to you in large part by our land-use patterns

Just spent the past hour+ trying and failing to get some @steampowered.com games to do so much as run. I love the idea of PC gaming, but I totally understand why so many people don't go near it.

Was at an event today that was unrelated to housing or politics, when a woman came up to me having known about my involvement in the YIMBY movement.

She shared with me the all too familiar story of having no choice but to leave LA because of the rent and move to Bakersfield.

Living close to Union Station is so clutch. 10/10 would recommend.

Economies of scale are real. Replacing the current patchwork of standards with a single set of rigorous, science-based rules to protect people's health and safety in new buildings would do a lot to help end the housing shortage.
Prefab would take off if we had uniform building regulations vs a regional hodge-podge which clearly gives the advantage to local specialists. And I mean local specialists like Weyerhauser which sells engineered products nationally through a hodge-podge of regional regs

This. Following the horrors of ICE and the Trump administration, Democrats must be the party that is explicitly and unapologetically PRO-immigration.

Immigrants Make America Great!
And I think liberals should stop taking the bait and ceding ground on immigration.

Immigration is good. Multiculturalism is good. Free trade is good. Stop being embarrassed to say so.

The idea that we need to deport 100 million people - almost one out of every three Americans! - was, a year ago, a deranged claim you’d hear from neo-Nazis to give themselves permission for limitless mass violence. Now it’s coming directly from this horrific agency’s horrific press office

2025 was one of the- if not the- biggest years of my life.

This year I had my second cat, became an Angelino, began my car-free life, helped pass one of the biggest housing bills in the history of California, and set a few other personal records.

2026 is going to be a year of building and growth.

A lot of Blueskiers are going to dismiss this observation because of the source, but it is correct. I'll just add that I don't think there's anything special about single-family homes that means they should never be rentals, any more than there's a rule that multifamily units should never be condos.
