I think it is corrosive on a spiritual level to live in a world where we are so unused to justice that a political assassination feels like cause for celebration.

We get to feel conflicted about this, we have been deprived every "appropriate" route to justice

And also, this is not justice

Utah was the first state to allow open carry on campus. A would-be assailant could walk right onto campus armed as they please and nobody could’ve done a thing about it.
In 2014, Anita Sarkeesian canceled an event at Utah State after a credible assassination threat because the school’s response was that Utah allows guns on college campuses.

People have warned about this kind of violence for years. But they weren’t the people the powers at be wanted to protect.

I have no idea what white people are talking about right now. The warnings that the fascists will "use this" to do more violence. WHAT WON'T THEY USE? You've watched them deploy the US military on US soil using bullshit pretexts. What even are you talking about?

Last night I finally finished collecting my floor speech data! I have much left to do but at least I can get to the interesting part of my dissertation now.

YES! Calls for 'more categories' or 'more inclusive' rules for changing gender markers is the wrong approach.

We instead need to expose the inherent violence of classification systems for queer communities and fight for a future without the use of gender markers on passports.
Rather than restoring the previous status quo, the next Democratic administration should remove gender markers from identification entirely to protect privacy, prevent harassment, and reduce bureaucracy aridrennen.substack.com/p/the-cultur...
The Culture War Over Sex Markers on IDs Is Causing Chaos. Here’s How We End It
Most people assume sex markers have always been a passport requirement.

Question for more experienced academics: What is the etiquette for essays you posted pseudonymously on social media? Can you adapt those to put on your professional website? If so, how? (So as not to run into weird plagiarism issues.)

American politics is stressful and only likely to become more so. I haven't found good resources for political scientists on coping with political stress, but here's one for journalists that I've found helpful.

NYT going straight into laundering "white birthrates are falling" stories as human interest pieces about white ladies "grieving" their daughters' choices.

The biggest thing any ally could do for a trans person right now is get them a job in a blue state
We need real allies. We need job connections, not "love is love" or "trans rights are human rights" posts. We need to pull those resources into helping get people connected with jobs and housing in safer states. Again, we need real allies; we're at this by ourselves in a system that stigmatizes us.

For my dissertation research I've been spending a lot of time working with floor speeches from state legislatures. In a realization that should not have surprised me but did, the more annoying it is to do the data work the less professional the legislature is.

as a voter i’d actually love some common sense on transgender issues actually. nationalized healthcare, leaving us alone otherwise, things of this nature.

Keep seeing posts that start if you're upset about x you should also/actually/really be upset about y and I just want them to know, do not worry! I am absolutely without question upset about everything.

With COVID rates high and hospitalizations rising, we are seeing every institution from governments to hospitals wheel out excuses for doing nothing. We're years into the pandemic. You all know what you need to do. But you are choosing to prioritize profits over people's health.
