For my latest @opinion.bloomberg.com, wrote about FDA's disastrous decision--or, really, it seems Vinay Prasad's singular choice--to turn away Moderna's flu vaccine application without a review. The problem is much bigger than this one vaccine. (🎁 link):

tfw you’ve summed up your whole writing career and then attributed it to “left wing discourse on A.I.”
In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

Right now, “left-wing discourse on A.I. feels like a collection of irritable mental gestures in search of a consistent theme,” our columnist Ross Douthat writes.

as someone who tries to work in these spaces outside my work.. this is such a brutal, elegant gutpunch of reality. (try fighting with San Franciscans on efforts to open even the most modest Safe Injection Site!)

Imagine a world where a University admin makes a clear policy that attacking profs and making stupid LibsofTikTok videos get you automatically expelled, transcripts deleted, banned from campus, no appeal, immediately enforced. You don’t have to accommodate the most disingenuous trolls!
Imagine trying to teach an opinion writing course, where half the course is devoted to challenging students’ perceptions and biases so they can argue their opinions more persuasively.

You’d get fired in week one.

“Let us be clear: we want the power of the state. We wish to hold the criminals of the regime accountable. We wish to seize back the public funds looted by Trump and his cronies. We wish to undo the damage he has done to the government. More than any of that we wish to rebuild.”
From Powerlessness to Power
We will not achieve any of our ultimate goals without exercising state power, and the most effective way to take state power is through nonviolent but confrontational resistance.

This is an excellent summary of the state of US science in 2026. If there ever is an “ after this”, there should be a serious reexamination of how big science in the US is organized, but totally blowing it up was not the answer.
