During the current extraordinary surge of book-banning efforts, committed advocacy by library workers & their allies is stemming the tide of censorship attempts in both school & public libraries, with more & more states enacting anti-book-ban laws.

An important reminder that GenAI is NOT intelligent!
A fantastic link to be shared with anyone who declares they think ChatGPT is great for research, editing, any number of support tools for writing.

It's telling them what they want to hear, even if it means lying.
This is a hell of a thing to read.

A surprisingly good article in the US Guardian about hypernormalisation.

“We are in a period now when it’s absolutely essential to protest…”
Systems are crumbling - but daily life continues. The dissonance is real
If everything feels broken but strangely normal, the Soviet-era concept of hypernormalization can help

The Siren the Song and The Spy is out in audio today, w a quintet of narrators! It's the sequel to The Mermaid the Witch and the Sea, & I fear it is more relevant now than when I wrote it.

Imagine this being your life? I'm not about to say my life is incredible but at least I don't spend ANY if it obsessing about who is using which public toilets.

All this. You have to ask *why are they selling it so hard*? What is up with all the propaganda around AI? The reason is not because it is the inevitable shape of the future; the reason is because it sucks, it's failed to achieve widespread utility, but they need to recoup billions in investments.
Framing the adoption of AI as an historical inevitability, rather than a way to do a thing you want or need done, gives the game away.

Nobody selling it this hard cares whether it helps; they want it to be the thing you have to deal with, like it or not. Problems, solutions, what’s the difference?
Bizarrely framed article about the people (all women) who ‘refuse to use AI’. And a #philosophy professor who says “The moment to opt out of #AI has already passed”. Oh well. That’s that then. 🤷‍♂️ #AIEthics www.bbc.com/news/article...

The Trump-loving, climate change denying, racist, homophobic, transphobic, right wing LNP lost!! Badly!

I'm so relieved I can't even put it into words.
Voting duty done. Now to anxiously await the results...
Australia's election day tomorrow and I've never been so anxious about one (specifically, the LNP winning). I feel ill.
