We will really miss this hard-working, FOI filing, fun-loving whirlwind of a reporter @texasobserver.org ! It’s been great working with @francescadnunz.bsky.social. No one really can take her place, but apply if you love #investigations, #immigration and #border coverage!
some professional news: Monday is my last day at the Texas Observer.

I'll be able to say more soon about where I'm going next. I'm staying on the immigration enforcement beat. 🧵

Me: Can you imagine what Paw Paw would do if he were alive and able bodied right now.

Mom: Yeah, I can. He was very protective of people.

Me: That house would've been packed with people. Safest place in town.

My grandpa (with backup from my grandma):
Another time, a woman in the neighborhood ran to my grandparents to hide from her abusive partner. He kept pointing on their door telling her to come out. My grandpa warned him many times to go away. Well, I'll let the strib pick it up from here.
Long story short cops told ol' buddy: he warned you

the term "daddy" sadly slinks out of bedroom usage across the country
Trump on NATO: "Until the last few days when I told them about Iceland, they loved me. They called me daddy."

(He means Greenland.)

Honestly? I think it means that we have to triple down on the things that we already know work —to go to the tactics and strategies that have been proven by data. Listening to scholars of authoritarianism, too.

I've been sharing this around, and I know a few people who've discovered they're now Canadian citizens!

Very proud of this investigation for @chicagotribune.com with Jonathan Bullington, graphics by Claire Malon and photos by E. Jason Wambsgans. Gift link:

Abandoned oil and gas wells pose environmental and public health risks. For three decades, the state has mismanaged funds earmarked for minimizing the threat.

Lassie: BARK! BARK!

Sheriff Tom: Two hours ago? Why didn't you say anything?

Lassie: BARK! BARK!

Sheriff Tom: Lassie. You don't mean that.

WANDA is such a wonderful and unsettling movie. It's also based in part on the strange life of Alma Malone, whom I wrote about for Topic (RIP) several years ago (and reprinted in UNSPEAKABLE ACTS because you know, editor's discretion.)

Here's an archived link to that 2017 story:

There's a good reason that Michael B. Jordan has a B in his name, and it has everything to do with a certain NBA legend.

“But what deeply troubles me now is that for all the steps we've taken toward integration, I've come to believe that we are integrating into a burning house."

Dr. King said this famous quote on March 27th, 1968, mere days before his murder. But the context around the quote is interesting...

I looked up the real answer, but it’s boring, so I’m just going to stay irritated at the concept of putting crackers in a barrel. Why would anyone do that? Crackers are square. Barrels are round. The geometry is unpleasant to imagine. Also fuck ICE.
