While #EconSky is talking about tariffs today, @anselmkuesters.bsky.social and I investigate another "t"-term that is controversial in economics: Technological Unemployment

Wise words from WEB DuBois to gird us today: "It would be shame and cowardice to surrender this glorious land and its opportunities for civilization and humanity to the thugs and lynchers, the mobs and profiteers, the monopolists & gamblers who today choke its soul and steal its resources."

Try to imagine the incandescent rage of the family of a Danish servicemember who was killed fighting America’s war in Afghanistan.
Trump on NATO: "I've always said, will they be there if we ever needed them? That's really the ultimate test. I'm not sure of that. We've never needed them. They'll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan and this or that. And they did. They stayed a little back, off the front lines."

"41 percent of Grok’s images — or 1.8 million — were sexualized depictions of women... including more than 23,000 of children."
We set out to determine how many images of women and girls Grok created during its nudifying spree. What we found was “industrial-scale abuse,” experts said. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/22/t...

it is true that some Americans waved the flag as they committed unspeakable acts of evil

but other Americans waved that same flag marching into battle against their own former slaveowners

you get to decide who has the legitimate claim

The constitution says that the stonks of the Nine Wizards must go up
it is so funny that it is now apparently a bedrock principle of originalism that the unitary executive applies to everything except for the Federal Reserve which is different because we said so
Kavanaugh is sounding even more skeptical than any of the other conservatives. He's coming out and saying "letting you do this would hurt Fed independence".

“My last territorial demand is Greenland”
So basically do what everyone has been doing (ignoring the whining about wanting Greenland)

*TRUMP ON USING EXCESSIVE FORCE: I WON'T DO THAT
*TRUMP: ALL THE US IS ASKING FOR IS GREENLAND

Nothing but respect for My Actual President 2001-2009
Don't really care if it's entirely accurate, I'm enjoying the mental image of Al Gore whipping Swiss dinner rolls at Howard Lutnik and telling him to shut the fuck up

I have to say, I’m not convinced of the productiveness of the Americans who didn’t want any of this and the Europeans who didn’t want any of this yelling at the other lot that it’s all their fault on the website for people who didn’t want any of this

I’m sure the New York Times and the rest of the US media will find a way to turn this into something that looks normal. That’s what they think they are paid to do.
Listening to Trump presser for 40 mins. Rambling, repetitive stream of consciousness. Narcissistic in extreme. Every thought linked back to whether the person or entity voted for or likes Trump. If Biden had delivered this there would have been serious concern about his health.

This is another indication Newsom should not be the Democratic nominee. Insulting global leaders for failing to stand up to Trump is really counterproductive. It’s our mess, we need to fix it.

Again: there is zero constitutional authority to impose tariffs based on “that head of state doesn’t want to play with me”
Jeez

Q: “Have you invited Putin to be a member of the Board of Peace?”

Trump: “Yeah. He's been invited”

On Macron saying he will not join the Board of Peace

Trump: “Nobody wants him.. If they feel hostile, I’ll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes & he’ll join”

“Will Republicans (voters and elected officials) do the right thing?” has been the question for ten years.

Unfortunately we have a good idea of the answer 🙃
Imagine if there were even 5 Republicans in Congress that would put their country before Trump...but nope.

Apart from the rest of the insanity here, admitting he only stopped those eight wars (which he didn’t stop) to win a Nobel Prize—not because war is terrible!—is truly deranged behavior.
Not the sort of letter committed to paper by a well man. "Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace"

Just a reminder that no matter what John Roberts and the other Republican Wizards say, he has no constitutional authority to do this.
Trump says he'll impose a 10% tariff (rising to 25% in June) on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland, because they've sent people to Greenland, until the US can buy Greenland.
