What if the Deep State was just the norms we made along the way?
So it's a Kavanaugh murder?

People who fancy quoting the Melian Dialogue ("the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must") ignore the fact that Thucydides was clearly portraying this as the kind of hubris that squandered Athens' primacy and paved the way for a devastating peer war that it ultimately lost.

Kinda fucked that we lost MTV and the Corporation For Public Broadcasting in the same week.

And I just think you have to understand that about these people, they're barely capable of formulating the question "why should I do this?" - the fact that other people don't want them to but they can and therefore they're demonstrating their power over them by so doing, that's it, that's enough.

I really hate when a new word appears out of nowhere thanks to tech bros and grifters/influencers and then starts filling my online feed like flies on rotting meat. Like today’s entry: “peptides”

Real monkey paw kinda wish, but sometimes I really wish the Jan 6 rioters did manage to get a hold of a few actual congressional members. If they had MAGA would be the acknowledged traitorous stain on America it should be now instead of a focal point of fascist gaslighting

there are fields that help you understand why the world's most powerful defense establishment is being controlled by mentally ill people but military theory isn't one of them

If you made a Venn diagram of every weird person I knew in Silicon Valley during the first dot-com boom, centrifuged it, extracted the pellet, and re-suspended it in high-proof eugenics with a splash of AI, you'd end up with something like this.

It'll take a strong stomach to read this "gift" link.

“Students should be main characters in their own education, and not observers, sidelined so that the plagiarism machine can shine.”
Perfect example fresh off the digital presses from Peter Greene on how even the "positive" AI integration is turning students into spectators, rather than asking them to be participants. It shouldn't be hard to see how misguided this is. curmudgucation.substack.com/p/ai-student...

Thinking a lot about how Trump signifies a return to the GOP of the late 19th/early 20th, before the New Deal hegemony forced them to accept a lot of liberal democratic premises, *but* combined with the residual effects of absorbing the former Dixiecrats in the 60/70s

Here’s a fun top five: things that are consensus among historians but are essentially unknown by the public. Richard I, a bad king of England. Roman Empire, fell in 1453. Paul, more important than Jesus. Witch burning, a modern phenomenon not a medieval one. Britain last invaded in 1688. Yours?
As someone who wrote a dissertation on that damnable Frenchman; one can only hope.

Food was scarce, and the government of the quote-unquote United Kingdom looked for alternatives. 1/

Had a close friend, was into big bank fintech starting in the 90s, he went MAGA, so stopped talking to him…but I recall an ongoing argument we had in the late 00s. He was a huge proponent of Facebook as a cultural project, I’d counter that Twitter was & would prove more important/influential… (1/2)
