Hey #skystorians, quick question. Watched Master and Commander with my son. He got interested in captains and ships logs. Went searching (UK archives) but many from early 19th century are not digitized. Just curious, what are the reasons? Don't want to make assumptions. #naval history #archives

4.5/5 stars- You will not learn any grand history from Unsinkable. You will not study campaigns or invasions or doctrine. You will learn about five men and their ship and everything that forged them together to such a degree that Plunkett was a holy word to them even in their twilight. #histbookchat

The stunning, 6-masted schooner Delaware Sun started life as the William L. Douglas, built in 1903 in Quincy, Massachusetts.

She was the largest 6-masted steel collier ever built and the lower parts of her masts were hollow steel cylinders. (1/3) 🧵

An outcome of my research into the #PhilosopherShips of #StephenGirard is that I now get very excited about little chunks of wood in various museum collections. Here's an example: a piece of the ROUSSEAU at Girard College.

Oh, you gonna take me home tonight
Oh, down beside that red fire light
Oh, you gonna let it all hang out

The River Main was the most important route to Frankfurt until the mid-19th c. Since the river was too shallow, only long, narrow boats were able to navigate the Main.
Here is a model of a Main ship. 1/2

You may have seen the sinking of the German heavy cruiser BLUCHER in the Battle of Drøbak Sound from the 2016 film, “The King’s Choice.” This is a longer sequence of that same event from this year’s “The Battle of Oslo.” English subtitles.
