Under the terms of the London Treaty of 1930, the battleship Wyoming was stripped of her armor and half of her main armament, being converted to a training ship. Her last 12" guns were removed in 1944, when she gained a large number of anti-aircraft guns. Sold for scrapping in 1947.

Provo Wallis joined the Royal Navy (officially) in 1795 when he was put on the books of HMS Oiseau as an able seaman at the age of four.
He first went to sea as a nine year old midshipman on HMS Cleopatra in 1800. 🧵

There are at least 22 cruisers in this picture of the Reserve Basin of the Philadelphia Naval Yard. Most of them are Cleveland class light cruisers, but there are also a few New Orleans class heavy cruisers on the center left and the incomplete large cruiser Hawaii on the lower right.

On this date in 1942, the USS Essex, first of her class of 24 aircraft carriers is commissioned. She would serve throughout the remainder of WW2, served in various capacities thoughout the 50s and 60s, and was decommissioned in June, 1969.

On this day in 1922, the Japanese aircraft carrier Hosho is commissioned. Although begun after HMS Hermes, Hosho was the first purpose-built aircraft carrier built from the keel up. Survived WW2 to be scrapped in 1947.

In late 1943 HMS Malaya was placed in reserve. She was used as a target ship at Loch Striven, Scotland for the experimental Highball bouncing bomb. As shown in the video, a Mosquito got a hit, tearing a large hole in the ship's forward hull ahead of the belt armor.

On this date in 1837, George Dewey is born in Montpelier, Vermont. Enters the Navy in 1854, serves in Civil War, commands the US Asiatic Squadron in its victory over the Spanish at Manila Bay in 1898, and only man to hold the rank of Admiral of the Navy. Died 1917.
