The Japanese lost one battleship and a destroyer, while the US lost three destroyers.
This was the first of two engagements in the Pacific War where Japanese and US battleships met in combat, the second being at Surigao Strait in 1944.

On this day in 1942, the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal begins. In the first engagement, which turned into a true "Fire away Flanagan," the US Navy loses two light cruisers, two destroyers, and Admirals Callaghan and Scott.
The Japanese lose the battleship Hiei and two destroyers.

The Delhi was refitted between May and December 1941 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Her 6" guns were removed and replaced with US 5" 38 caliber guns and she was equipped with the latest US fire control.
