HMS Courageous was the lead ship of the Courageous-class battlecruisers built for the Royal Navy during the First World War. Designed to support the Baltic Project championed by First Sea Lord John Fisher, the ship was very lightly armoured and armed with only a few heavy guns. Courageous was completed in late 1916 and spent the war patrolling the North Sea. She participated in the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight in November 1917 and was present when the German High Seas Fleet surrendered a year later. Courageous was decommissioned after the war, then rebuilt as an aircraft carrier during the mid-1920s. She could carry 48 aircraft compared to the 36 carried by her half-sister Furious on approximately the same displacement. After recommissioning she spent most of her career operating off Great Britain and Ireland. She briefly became a training carrier, but reverted to her normal role a few months before the start of the Second World War in September 1939. Courageous was torpedoed and sunk in the opening weeks of the war, going down with more than 500 of her crew.

B-17G-95-BO 43-38728 was delivered at Lincoln on 21/9/44. It was assigned to the 851 Bomber Squadron 490 Bomber Group. It survived the war and was returned to the USA on 9/7/45. The Reconstruction Finance Corporation disposed of the aircraft for scrap metal.

Bulgaria received around 96 captured French Dewoitine D.520 fighters from Germany in late 1943, using them primarily for defending against Allied bomber raids on Sofia alongside Messerschmitt Bf 109s, proving quite effective despite their obsolescence. These aircraft served in the 6th Fighter Regiment.

Bulgaria ordered 78 Avia B-534 biplane fighters in 1939. These were obtained from Germany which had captured a large number of them. The final aircraft were not delivered until March 1942. At the same time, Bulgaria ordered more modern fighters such as the Messerschmitt Bf 109E and Dewoitine D.520, which resulted in the outdated B-534s seeing little frontline service. However on 1 August 1943, 48 Avias made several passes at Consolidated B-24 Liberators returning from the raid on Ploieşti. Although several hits were scored, none of the bombers were shot down.

The Westland Whirlwind was a British twin-engined heavy fighter developed by Westland Aircraft. A contemporary of the Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane, it was the first single-seat, twin-engined, cannon-armed fighter of the Royal Air Force. When it first flew in 1938, the Whirlwind was one of the fastest combat aircraft in the world, and with four Hispano-Suiza HS.404 20mm autocannon in its nose, the most heavily armed. Protracted development problems with its Rolls-Royce Peregrine engines delayed the project and only 116 Whirlwinds were built. During the Second World War, only three RAF squadrons (263 and 137 operationally and 25 Sqn for testing) were equipped with the Whirlwind but despite its success as a fighter and ground attack aircraft, it was withdrawn from service in 1943.

HSwMS Drottning Victoria, was a Sverige-class coastal defence ship of the Swedish Navy. The vessel was the third and last ship in the Sverige class along with HSwMS Sverige and HSwMS Gustaf V. HSwMS Drottning Victoria was launched on 15 September 1917 at Kockums in Malmö and delivered to the Navy on 12 March 1921. Armament consisted of four 28 cm guns and a secondary armament of eight 15.2 cm guns. During the interwar period, the ship underwent several modernizations and was one of the most powerful vessels in the fleet during the Second World War. The ship was decommissioned in 1957 and was later sold for scrapping.
