I thought the “socially awkward white male nerd to fascist pipeline” was sufficiently obvious in 2017 as to not require further elaboration. But considering these guys are not only still around but more active than ever, I clearly was wrong about that.

I went down that pipeline and came back. A 🧵

Someone out there got their research grant cancelled via text message and now your kid dies in agony because instead of that research happening Elsewhere they end up getting a job as a barista

And yes, I mean LLMs and generative shit. You know. The stuff that the bubble is made of.

Man, I picked the wrong week to finally get sufficiently addicted to using AI for something that I would personally mind if all of those companies suddenly shut down. FML.

The lengths that I would go to find something that is surprisingly similar to academic work, but not _actually_ related to any classes I was taking and being graded on, is pretty amazing.

I am not exaggerating this at all. The only thing I've said that isn't factual autobiography is the part where I had to balls to actually tell the girl in question about any of it. (Probably a wise move)

climate change'll take care of that for her, won't it?

There's actually a very famous in-universe work written about this character, which I just happened to have recently translated into English. Gotta warn you though, its from a later, less _reverent_ age in-universe. It's kinda a satirical play. Well, yes of course it's dirty, but so is Shakespeare!

I'm absolutely a hypocrite about this because I actually moved from a swing state to one that's safe blue, to minimize the likelyhood of a GOP-run statehouse any time soon. But yeah, I wish more *other* people would do this.

Wait till you find out it's also in 2 more languages: one language that evolved from the first one, and one where the name is an loanword, used mainly in religious contexts, due to the early deification of one of the more famous people to have the name..
November 24, 2025 at 9:15 PM
Yeah but I was a teenage "I'm gonna invent my own languages like Tolkien did" guy. Nothing impresses the ladies like, "hey girl, I deliberately constructed the grammar in one of my fictive languages so that your name, coincidentally, is the feminine form of the word for 'gold', like your hair"

Maybe a couple of episodes? Should probably pick it up again

Also, TIL that "fir" (as in the tree) and "fur" (as in animal hair) are completely unrelated words. Nobody ever decided to call the trees that because they thought they looked furry. Different root words all the way back to Proto-Indo-European. wtf.
I don't have to deposit checks very often anymore but when I do, I write "for deposit only" in such chicken-scratch that my wife accuses me of writing "fir delosil arly"

There is more that unites us than divides us.

Oh it gets worse than that. There's also "fake it till you make it, and even if you don't make it keep faking anyway. don't settle down with one partner, have as many as possible, ethically or not", for example, and the classic "feminism has made it impossible to be a man, repeal the 19th now!"

My take on this used to be that this was a temporary situation that would inevitably result in our current warrior class overthrowing the aristocracy and become the new aristocracy. That's what I expected from 1990-something until fairly recently. I think it woulda happened by now if it was ever.

Vaccines themselves are such a metaphor for how the anti-vax demographic views society. If the rest of us didn’t do our part, most of them would be doing a very different risk assessment before declining immunization. They depend on the rest of us getting vaccinated so we stay above herd immunity.

I've got to stop doing that. The depression and anxiety that hits me after is like clockwork. *sighs*

This joins the eternal debate over the general nature of the relationship between anthro and non-anthro versions of the same species in fictional worlds that have both.

Aka “what the hell *is* Goofy?”.

(And would a “de-anthropomorphed” *human* just be a regular ape or some third thing?)
I’m a huge fan of anthropomorphic food eating non-anthropomorphic versions of itself—two of my favorites are this jovial shrimp eating ceviche and the most terrifying hot dog king imaginable

Many years ago I bought a bobble-head based very closely on this. My daughter overruled me and declared it unfit to be displayed in the house, car, or anywhere else. I relented. In the fullness of time she was right.
