Hey "5 Cover Songs" fam: January's challenge is all about kinship. Start thinking about all those cover tunes that mention third cousins twice removed. #5CoverSongsRelation starts Jan. 27 (or 6 p.m. Eastern Jan. 26 if you're like Aunt Judy and show up early to everything.)

ICE goons surrounded a school bus. A school bus! Abolish ICE and prosecute every last one of these thugs and the people who enabled them.

Your occasional reminder that DOGE committed crimes and people need to be indicted for them if we ever make it out of this nightmare.

The newly updated Music app on my iPhone has inexplicably changed 90% of my albums that previously had no artwork to @thewaroncars.bsky.social logo.

Um, iOS 26.2 welcome to The War on Cars, I guess?

Day 3 - "Silver Street" (2002)

I was well familiar with the full-band demo recorded back in 1994 with Ben Folds Five, but these days I prefer it as a solo piano ballad—and not just because I was in the audience that's cheering on this live recording!

9. "No Surprises" (1997)

Another strong contender for my "most beautiful Radiohead melody" non-award. Dark, despondent dissatisfaction all wrapped in a lullaby.

I'll say yet again: Trump & his party do something virtually every day that constitutes a more violent & alarming suppression of speech than anything that happened during the entire alleged tyranny of woke. Every day. Yet the entire Free Spech army has just vanished into mist.
I wrote on the shameful situation re: the recession of a deanship to Emily Suski at the University of Arkansas Law. What was the reason? Prof. Suski signed an amicus brief supporting trans rights. The Arkansas legislators admitted that was it! Horrible outcome. ballsandstrikes.org/legal-cultur...
A Law School Dean Signed a Brief Defending Trans Rights. She Lost Her Job Because of It
The revocation of Emily Suski’s job offer at the University of Arkansas sends a chilling message to law professors everywhere.

9. "No Mutuals," Fake Fruit
from FAKE FRUIT (2021)

For this #MusicChallenge, I've avoided local bands that even the average Bay Area resident is unaware of, but these next 2 songs are too perfect not to post. And Pitchfork did review the Oakland post-punk band's debut!

It’s perverse beyond description: my own government trying as hard as it can not to protect my city, but to enraged, attack, and destroy it, I campaign of pure malevolent aggression, conducted by US government paramilitaries against its own citizenry.

We need ALL HANDS ON DECK right now for Minneapolis. I'm going to start a thread of videos coming out of today. We need to get some media eyes on this globally.🧵🧵🧵

guys minneapolis is a living hell today. they've tear-gassed so many people, tear-gassed a park, beaten people up in front of me. greg bovino is rolling around to gas stations and posing in front of them, trying to cause a riot.

10. "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man," The Bob Seger System
from RAMBLIN' GAMBLIN' MAN (single 1968, album 1969)

Seger had to rename his debut album after the moderate success of the opening track as a single. He wouldn't have another hit on that level for 8 years.

10. "Karma Police" (1997)

Sticking with OK COMPUTER as we head into my Top 10. Teenage me had trouble finding a good Radiohead entry point, but in college with an ethernet connection & Limewire, I downloaded this. Might have been the first time I *really* listened.

Day 2 - "Not the Same" (2001)

Really hard to limit myself to just 2 songs from ROCKIN' THE SUBURBS. Released on 9/11. Lyrics are about a guy who became a born-again Christian after getting really high, but it was strangely comforting to me all that week.

Playing catch up, but I'll post 10 songs from 2000-2009. That means solo Ben only, as Ben Folds Five didn't release anything from 1999-2012.

Chronological order

Day 1 - "Zak and Sara" (2001)

FACT: Half the songs on his solo debut have names in titles.

I find it very sadly funny that an article about "Princeton Council recommits to Climate Action Plan" shares the front page with an article about how New Jersey has enacted the most stringent regulations on e-bikes in the country.

Hey Canada, how does one get one of these “intelligent leaders who rise to the occasion with well-articulated beliefs and clear-eyed resolve”? Do you have any extras we could borrow?
This is the best speech, just from a pure rhetoric perspective - its sophistication and persuasiveness - that I've seen a politician deliver in a good long while. Really recommend watching or reading the whole thing.
A YouTube link for those looking for it. No words.

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.
