I'm now open to work and looking for my next role as a Writer or Game Designer in games, now that my contract has ended.

I have worked on the award-nominated Civilization VII, and have many other indie and AA projects where I was responsible for content, systems and production.

Sorry to hear that, Sahil. Can I interest you in a funny cat picture from Tuna judging me during a call?

I'm building a few! Happy to send over a link.

I think @ramiismail.com has done an excellent job covering the safety issues for people on visas coming to the states, but that's also a good thing to highlight.

TLDR:
Ask yourself why now, and for what purpose, you need to go to this event.

And make sure you're connecting ahead of time.
February 12, 2026 at 5:43 PM
Are there panels/programming that speak to you? Are there events you will miss, that are a one-time opportunity?

That's valid! Some things only happen once, but a lot of the grants, programs and raffles that hand out tickets to GDC are a regular occurrence.

If your goal is to find a job, and specifically for game writing, I don't think you will find that many companies hiring narrative right *now*.

And that brings me to--why do you want to go this year?
February 12, 2026 at 5:43 PM
(I mostly focus on this, because it's where I specialize in)

But, you can just apply to these studios. I don't see recruiters for the studios hiring narrative designers with booths, or a large presence.

In fact, many companies are lowering the amount of effort in their presence at these shows.
February 12, 2026 at 5:43 PM
My personal recommendation is to build up a network remotely, and strengthen it, before attending these events--as a safety measure.

Another question: "What is your purpose/goal, and why does it have to be right now?"

Timing is important. Yes, we are seeing emerging roles in narrative/writing
February 12, 2026 at 5:43 PM
There were people I knew, and who were keeping an eye out for me.

If this is your first time meeting people in the industry, especially as a marginalized gender, not having a colleague to go to events with can be incredibly dangerous.

Even if you have colleagues, situations can still arise.
February 12, 2026 at 5:43 PM
"Do you have the safety net to go?"

When I went in 2024, there was a situation of a man groping women in a spot frequented by game writers. I had a lot of colleagues DM'ing me, and at all times I was with 2-3 friends who I knew I could trust.

In the panels, parties, bars, hotel lobbies (CONT)

There's a lot of reasons devs may want to go to GDC, and I've been added to a few introductions of connections who won a raffle/are thinking about attending but are not quite sure.

I don't believe that stating "don't go" is... the way to go with these conversations.

Instead, I ask a few Q's:

Know anyone interested in writing video games? I'm chatting about it next Thursday, 6PM at MIT, so plan ahead #writing #gamedev

owner groups, rather than focusing on just the games industry.

This is going to sound odd but... family group chats.

I send it to friendships I have outside of games, and give enough context clues to my family members so they re-share it into an ever growing Whatsapp chain

Facebook also helps, and sharing it in local game clubs and befriending small business

where would the gamedev community be without :eyesshake:

sorry not sorry. you were warned!!

if I join a meeting and say, "hey sorry, I'm very tired. so I don't have a filter right now," I can't be held legally liable for the feedback I deliver after that sentence

if bluesky drafts glitched today it'd sink the entire games industry
February 12, 2026 at 1:38 AM
This is the way.
February 12, 2026 at 1:33 AM
Huh, that's odd--first I've seen of it

I can only speak for people in my circle, yes there is censorship in these platforms. But there's also algorithms that thrive off controversy/reactions, and others (like this one) that don't.

Just my two cents though, could be wrong!
February 12, 2026 at 1:17 AM
I don't think it's a problem with the algorithm.

There's a lot of Bluesky users who want to stay aware of what is happening, without encouraging the algorithm to push reactions to their main feed.

I have five and counting, but uhh... digital footprints are important to be aware of!

But the ✨trauma✨ adds an additional layer of challenge to the obstacle of asking for help
